Most of the stuff with the first great quintet (Miles, Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones) is fantastic, esp. the marathon sessions (Steamin', Cookin', Walkin', etc.).
I believe Birth of the Cool was his first album. It's a very good one too, although all the tracks on it are relatively short (around 5 minutes). I like Miles more in long compositions full of improvisation. Milestones is a very good album as well, it came just before Kind of Blue and has a somewhat similar style, although less chilled out. The song Straight, No Chaser on it in particular is very nice.
And that's about all I have which came before Kind of Blue (besides Cookin', but that's already been mentioned).
The two Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants albums are the only ones I can really think of up until he started the first quintet.

Walkin' wasn't by the first quintet. It was recorded a year before Miles formed the quintet, and had a quintet (not the famous one) on some tracks and a sextet on others. The marathon session albums are Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin' with..., Workin' with..., and Relaxin' with...

My bad. Great album, either way.

Yeah. Anything with J.J. Johnson on trombone is cool.

You can hear him with Parker on - Burnin' Bird - a collection of uptempo recordings from the 40s, Davis is on most of it
