They are gold because it looks nice.
You can get strings in many different colours.

I have a sneaky feeling they might be:
Rotosound Bronze Bass 44 (strictly speaking for acoustic bass)
(Depends of course on the age of the video)

Well................have not watched the video due to connection speed (5KBPS on a good day).
So thus I am going on the fact that entwistle pretty much only played Rotosounds and the only one of their strings that I know to be a "gold" colour are those particular ones

I didn't like the first half of that solo, but damn Etwistle is one cool old bastard.

do you want him to do back flips while throwing his bass around his body?
that was damn awesome. he doesnt need to move around.

i didn't think it was that great actually, was good, but not damn awesome, and he could maybe smile? move AT ALL? you see bands live for a show, you can listen to their music on a CD.

Barely moving was always his trademark. I reckon it's better to just stand there than ruin it by trying to be something he's not.

He doesnt have "proper" left hand technique, but then alot of people dont. Juat play whats most comfortable.

he does seem out of place with the who, as he dosent move on stage and beside him there is a mad drummer, a guitarist who smashes everything up and an wild singer as well
EDIT: well used to have a mad drummer.

judging by you saying theyre gold, most likely theyre Maxima/Optima Golds. theyre goldplated strings at about $80.00 USD for a pack of four. thats alot for a set of strings, although they are sposed to be excellent.

He looks like an idiot with that bass imo, maybe someone out of a death metal band, not him. And i hate the way he solos. Just seems a bit messy and random to me. That is of course my opinion.
As for the strings, are you sure it's not just the silk round the tops of them?

That's the solo from 5:15 Live at the Albert Hall... I don't like it. He's not a solo player... in a band context, he's one of the best rock bassists out there. He's the daddy of rock bass. But solo... people either seem to love him or hate him.
