What exactly are pinch harmonics? I don't think I've actually ever heard that term until just recently, when I was trying to play a tab for Welcome Home, by Coheed & Cambria, which is as follows.

Pre-Verse 1 Guitar III
E|--------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------7*-------------------------------7*-------------------|
D|---9-10-----10-9-7--7-10-9-7--------9-10----10-9--------------|
A|-----------------------------10-9----------------9--12-10-----|
E|-------------------------------------------------10-14-12-10*-|

The note on the 7th fret of the third string has an asterisk after it, which is listed in the key as a "pinch harmonic." At first, I thought "Whatever, I don't know what that is, I'll just play that note without doing anything special." But, when I played it normal, it didn't sound right. So, obviously, there's something else I need to be doing(pinch harmonic), but I have no idea how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Pinch harmonics (or "false" harmonics), are the tone that's produced when you strike a string with your pick, letting your thumb just barely touch against it. A pinch harmonic is that high-pitched squeal you get with the guitar, best known in 80's rock music. It takes a while to be able to control a pinch harmonic, so don't get discouraged if you can't do it well for a while. :thumb:

They take a while to get and it also depends on the song.

Example most have heard would be,

Slipknot Duality- That high pitch squeal after the bar cords.

You'll also notice different frets will have a different "sweet spot" of where to graze the string with your thumb.

As said above, they take a good while to get. So don't give up because it doesn't click in five minutes.
