So I have an Ibanez rd500. I never play it anymore at all, because of my schecter elite. Its a nice bass, but the schecter overshadows it. So I have a bass I never play at all just sitting around, and that got me thinking what should I do with it? I mean selling it was the first thing that came to mind, but I dont think itd be worth selling since its a somewhat cheap bass (price wise.) Then I thought turn it into a fretless, so it gives a use that my schecter doesnt have. But im not really sure what to do with it, so I was jst wondering what u guys think.

My main bass is a Yamaha RBX375 and i have a squier p-bass and the RBX374 as 'extra basses'. I dont think I would ever sell a bass as when im doing a gig i always take a second bass and they have different sounds.

use it as a back-up in case something happens to your better one, or defret it. I defretted my first bass (squier p).

i'd say defret it.. add some range to your field... or, sell it for what you can? no point in having it if your not gonna use it. i know several people out there looking for a good cheap bass to learn on... make a kid happy! haha

Defret it or just keep as a backup bass.

I think the defret is the best option, although it may be a bit strange on an Ibanez RD.

I'm keeping my first bass as it is, just getting the electronics sorted. I've defretted my 2nd bass. The great bit is that each bass has a unique playing point. my first bass is a 3/4 four sting so it's sweet for chords and slapping, the 2nd is fretless and my main bass is a 6er so it's got a bigger pitch range.

You've never lived...

they're such fun to play, but I always go back to fretted. I could never be a full time fretless player.

how much does it cost to defret...i have an Ibanez RD300 and i have the same problem and i was thinking of doing that to it...it just doesnt compare to the warwick or the SR506

I wish I had an extra bass. I'm in so many musical things that I never have my bass at home anymore, I am way out of practice and I am getting worse. Thank God I'm getting my Marcus Miller soon.

well I do have a show coming up :naughty: but its not a piece of junk, so I dont think that would be the smartest thing to do. I think for now I will just use it for a backup since Im starting to gig more often, then eventually defret it.

i'd suggest defretting it...

i did not use my p-bass at all...so i decided to defret it because i felt bad not playing it any more...

now i play it about 4 times a week...and its just fun to play a fretless...

Defret it and have a fretless bass as your back up

experiment. Do some crazzy stupid mod and have fun.. Wire a distortion pedal into your bass... sand the paint off paint it another color. Make your own on board effect so your bass will be totally original.

Defret it
Set it up for an alternate tuning, like BEAD or soemthing.
Tear it down for parts
Sell it
Make some sort of Frankenstein project out of it
Or just leave it as a backup...

Smashing it would be stupid since its a decent bass with nothing wrong with it...sell it if you dont want it.

im up for the modding. I'm working on my defretted jazz bass right as we speak. Once i got my warwick i didn't have a need for two jazz type basses. But because of the sentimental attachment i have with my fender, i decided to make it my mod bass. I put in duncans, a new pickguard, and defretted the neck.

future mods: series parallel switch, new volume/tone pots, possibly a new preamp.
