hey

I just recently discovered this genre, and I must say - I love it. Celtic New-age especially...stuff like Loreena McKennitt and Enya is amazing. Clannad is ok too. I'm afraid though that the good stuff here is kind of limited ? Or perhaps it's hard to find ? I'd be very greatful for any reccomendations...thanks. :chug:

edit : yeah, sorry...If a mod can please move this, thanks.

 The threadstarter's got a better idea of what New Age is than any of the repliers. :)

Okay, Loreena McKennit is probably my favorite female New Age singer, and she's a perfect example of what to expect from the genre. I'll basically give you a few suggestions on artists here:

For the Celtic feel New Age music, I would recommend Nightnoise, William Coulter, Mary McClaughlin, Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning, and Howard Baer. The strength of "Celtic music" in stores, though, lies in compilations, so I would also recommend getting pretty much any of the early Celtic Twilight compilations, and Celtic Voices too probably, and especially "Maidens of the Celtic Harp." Traditional music released on New Age music labels like Windham Hill and Narada will also likely have a lot of Celtic overtones to it, as much of our "traditional" music comes from France, England, Scotland, and Ireland. This includes Christmas music compilations. Some good acoustic guitar players to check out include Pat Kirtley, and ESPECIALLY Phil Keaggy: even though Phil is listed as a Inspirational/Christian artist, he does a lot of wonderful Celtic reel-style music and he's a great musician.

For "purer" New Age-style music, it's a huge must to have albums by guitarists like Alex de Grassi, William Ackerman, Michael Hedges, and composers like David Arkenstone, and maybe Bruce Becvar if you can find anything by him.

I've given you a lot of instrumental acts, because by and large there are very few vocalists of note IMO other than the ones you already mentioned: and a LOT of New Age music can be very syrupy. For instance, Yanni can get that way, and it ends up all just being "atmosphere" which sounds deceptively deep, but really is just a whole lot of wanky keyboard wind. In addition, all of these guys are pretty much innovators and are well-respected in their fields. Hopefully that gets you off to a good start.
