I'm thinking of doing my persuasive essay for class on "why bass guitar is more important than guitar in music".

So I need some links to quotations of "relevant" people (ie. musical experts, big names in music, etc.) saying this.

Points include "the bass is the meat of the song", "the bass is the rhythm for the melody", "the roots of a chord are the bass notes", etc.

Any help?

It isn't though each is equally improtant. In certain situations one instrument might be more prominent than another but that statement is just ignorant.

An essay isn't going to be persuasive if its 99% opinion.

Bass is not more important than guitar, and to think so is ludicrous.

I only am choosing to write this because I cannot sincerely think of any other topics to write about.

I don't agree with my assessment either. But hell if I care.

You've got to be kidding me.

You mean of ALL the things in this huge world, you can't think of one thing other than "Why bass is more important than guitar"?

Methinks you should put a tad bit more effort into your assignment.

It's that or I start writing about why I support dictatorships, why I feel nuclear weapons solve any world conflict, and why famine may actually benefit society in 30 years.

In other words...I don't want the CIA after me.

There are so many things in the world right now that can be debated. Should euthanasia be allowed in the UK? The controversy surrounding teenage pregnancies. The West invading Iraq

and all you can talk about is why bass is better than guitar when most people know you're wrong and those who don't probably don't give a ****

Actually, those could be some great topics to write about.

Tired topics.

Already too many debates on them.

I've already written many essays--school and on my own time--regarding some issues like that anyways.

I have yet to write anything musically related, however...that's the first topic that hit me.

Even though I disagree with my own assessment, thought it might be an interesting challenge to write with that perspective in mind.

I don't always choose to write about what I truly believe. It adds to the challenge of writing the piece.

How can you write an pursuasive essay on something you don't agree with, and most people that would say Bass is better than guitar are idiots anyway that nobody would listen to

fix'd. Why dont you compare something other then bass? Since you like challenge so much, try a comparison between drums and vocals. I'd find that very insteresting.

By simply recognizing the other side's perspective on the topic, their reasoning behind their opinion, and writing how they would prove it.

The art of debate, in other words.

Not a bad idea actually...

Not sure if I'd do vocals and percussion however.

Any other ideas?

And no, CIA. CIA works internationally (I'm in Canada).

the point is, that someone saying bass is better than guitar is the same as a hobo saying the apocolypse is coming the middle of the street. No one will care / not listen. The first principle of an essay is to write one on something which people will give a damn about

IMO, Guitar vs. Bass is overdone.

This is for a school essay.

I don't care who cares, so long as I get the marks.

If I were writing this for my own purposes, I wouldn't pick a topic such as that.

couldn't you do something like why Playstation is better than Xbox or something?

Exactly, and one of the basic foundations of essay writing and demonstrations is keeping the readers/audience interested

Criteria behind this particular essay assignment does not include writing about anything that'll actually keep anyone besides the teacher interested.

Basically, you can write about anything you want. Just make sure the points are backed up.
