View Full Version : Breaking into the Warwick field
I have decided to trade in one of my basses as chip in some cash and pick up for myself a Warwick Corvette $$ (Double Buck)
I have played it and have loved the tonal range and general feel.
I just want to know if anyone eles owns one of these and if so how do they compare to the actual Corvette and just general opinions and comments.
Thanks

I played one at a Guitar Center a few weeks ago. It's one of three bass I've ever played that I like better than my Corvette Standard (the $$, a Streamer Stage II, and, better than either of them, a purple sparkle Yamaha Attitude 10th Anniversary).

Wawick AND Cort Whore! I don't believe it!
It's even the same bass as me :amaze:
^^ I have been a secret warwick whore for a long time..........just never had the means to get hold of one.
Is it you who 101er has it in the black finish? Because I am lloking at getting it in the same colour then.

If I was the threadstarter, Id be looking for something that more "True Warwick" than a $$. The $$ just doesnt have the killer growl.

Does the FNA Jazzman have that "killer growl"?

No.
You wont really get too much growl from a sweet-spotted MM, or from an ash body.
Alot of the other 'wicks growl comes from a) the woods (bubinga, ovangkol, wenge) and b) the electronics (use of jazz-style singlecoils).

Who cares about the killer growl, the DoubleBuck has such sweet tone anyway that it compensates for the lack of growl. I love its tone compared to the Corvette I tried when I picked it up
I seriously recommend it :thumb:

even one right up against the bridge wouldnt have as much growl as a jazz in its bridge sweetspot/closer to the bridge.

For the most part, the growl is comming from the Single Coil pickups. The wood itself is actually playing a small part in it. Think about this, you get a growl from a Jazz bass and it uses totally different woods (ash or alder, maple, and/or rosewood), and Rickenbackers (maple and rosewood).
Warwicks growl is not the same as a Jazz or Ric. Even though the woods play a small part in it, they still play a part. Bubinga, ovangkol and wenge are a bit on the warmer side than ash, alder, or maple. This puts Warwicks growl more in the mids and low mids than the high mids as on a Jazz or Ric.
Humbuckers tend to be warmer sounding than single coils. Now, if you could split the humbucker and make it a single coil, that could possibly do it.

I much prefer the Corvette, it sounds and looks a million times better.
I was very unimpressed with the $$, really didn't work well for me at all.

What does Kubicki have to do with a thread about the Warwick $$? Oh thats right, nothing. It was just a lame cheapshot, and a rather crappy one at that.
Besides, I have serious doubts you've ever played one, they arent the kind of bass that just turns up in guitar shops.

I don't like having growl in my tone, but I don't mind hearing it or anything... Unless it's the growl from a Dolphin...

Corvette $$ = Nice bass. Huge range of tones, but I hate the Warwick necks, they're like a P-Bass neck on 'roids, different strokes for different folks.
