Sorry if this breaks a rule, I checked the rules thread and it doesn't seem to be... if it is, just delete it. I couldn't find a questions thread (apart from the one at the top, but I don't think that's it).

Anyway, just wondering whether I am better off buying a Standard (mexican-made) or japanese-made Fender? And also, if anyone owns either a Precision or a Jazz, or has tried both out, which is better in your opinion (sound-wise, I mean)? I've been playing for about 18 months or so, would I be better off staying put with my Ibanez for a while until I get a bit better, or should I just buy a new guitar anyway?

Thanks :thumb:

I've done the MIJ/MIM taste test with fretless Jazz basses. As far as sound quality, I prefer the MIM's pups, but everything else- the MIJ wins hands down.

As long as you have the money to buy your next bass and you think you need one, take the plunge otherwise wait.

I play pop-punk mainly. I'm looking for the kind of sound Mike Dirnt's bass has on Nimrod, he said he used a P-Bass but I can't find what make of pickup he uses.

I read a review somewhere that mexican made buzz really bad past the 5th fret or so, is that true?

Only if you get a lemon, with MIMs you have to play the bass so you know you're getting a decent one.

only if it's not set up right...every bass can buzz.

i dont know much about fenders.... and ive never played and MIJ, but i have played and MIM P and a MIM J, and ive played a MIA J.... personally i like the J-bass better better IMO you can get i wider range of sound out of it.... also i think a J may be the best for the tone your looking for.... a P has more of a bassier tone, but on a J you can get a bassier or treblier tone. depending on which pickup your using..... but IMO J's are better.... i suggest trying them first to see which you like though.... BTW, i suggest unless you really need a new bass, save up and get an MIA instead of a MIM or MIJ...

I have an MIM jazz bass, they have really improved in quality in the last few years. There is a misconception that Mexican Fenders are sub-standard but this just isnt true. You may hear a story or two of the occasional lemon, but as long as you make sure to "try before you buy" you'll be fine. I played a few different Jazz basses at guitar center until I found the one that played/felt best, and thats the one I bought. A couple little adjustments once I got home and now it plays beautifully.

ive got a japanese aerodyne, great guitar. It definetly beats my mexican p bass, although it was more expensive, although the biuld quality is also far superior on the jap.

MIJ

Really, we are comparing the standard, and the higher-quality version. Higher quality, of course (if you can afford) :).

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i've wondered for a while now. Is there a difference between CIJ and MIJ Fenders?

The letter.

They changed it after a certain year, for some reason. Same company, same basses.
