I have this great and fantastic idea.
Would anyone like to do an over the internet recording?
It would be fun... like this.
Collaborate to decide form and then have some person record the melody and then allow someone else to download it and add bass to it and then finally mix it and allow someone else to add drums to it. That would be pretty cool, eh?
I think it would be fun. Let's discuss

Hey, that's ...new?
I don't have ready access to good recording devices so I'm not necessarily going to be able to, but I think that with the composition challenges we've got happening, you'll be able to actually get this working - unlike a lot of people who come up with the idea from time to time. Maybe it could even be made into a challenge one month seeing as not too many people contributed last month... I dunno whether that could work or not...
But yeah, it'd be cool if it could get working.

I think that's a great idea, but most of us here have sucky recording devices so if we're gunna do anything it's not gunna be that good of a quality. Ofcourse someone can clean the final track later, but yeah good idea.
I'll do vocals:P

Maybe...you could have one person start with a certain instrument, and then...give a few days for whoever wants to to submit a guitar track and then let everyone choose which one of the tracks submitted to use. Then give a few days for people to submit a drum track, or keyboard track, or anything track and let people choose which one to use for each instrument. Just an idea...

i'll do bass maybe.
what kind of stuff would you be wanting to play?

it never works, people never have the dirve ot actually go through with it.

It DOES work....
Someone posts a "base" track and then everybody just randomly adds stuff to it and it doesn't have to be in a specific time span. The guy who does the basic track is the one who gets to choose which version he likes best. We can then post it in the Audio Arena for crits...
Why don't we start this weekend?

ok?! nice use of imagery...
well, once there's a song decided people can start sending in their version of it...
probably best to get drums recorded first for timing etc.

it would be better, but much harder to do... try an easy cover song first... then progress to other things. it'd be cool to record a few covers then try an original.

We need a bassist to first lay down a track.
Preferably and jazz/classically trained bassist. At least someone with lots of theoretical knowledge and steady time.
Before anything happens, we need a chord progression.
I'm suggesting an AABA tune (32-bar form)
for those who don't understand that, I'll explain
Here's how I think the first attempt should go.
A 8-bars of progression and melody
A same 8 bars repeated
B 8 bar bridge
A beginning 8 bars repeated
*1 measure tag into solo*
Instrumental solo of some kind for 32 bars.
*2nd bassists solo*
Bassist plays over chorus for 32 bars... or 64... depending on what he wants
*trading fours*
One instrument plays 4 bars... then drums play 4 bars... then another instrument until 32 bars has gone by. (do that for however many choruses)
A beginning 8 bars again
A repeat A section
B the bridge from the beginning
A repeat A section
*play the tag out*
If any bassist is familiar with this idea and want to record something then that would be awesome. You can have complete control of the form of the piece and even the progression, just post all the relevant details.
If anyone has suggestions on a chord progression, then please do submit your ideas.

to be honest... hmm...
yeah, I don't know what the theoretical calibur of a lot of the people here is, so I'm not sure what to expect.
I'm thinking more along the lines of
I^7............IV^7..VII0...III-7..VI-7..II-7....V7....
|.......|......|........|.......|.......|......|.. ......|.....|
descending cycle of fifths. Relatively easy.
But you guys can decide.
If any bassist wants to take it upon himself to go ahead and record something completely different, then go for it. Just let us know how it should be played. I'm ready and willing to contribute

I think it's swell and all, but the bass as the first instrument to record? seems kinda weird to me. Could be my point of view though.

well... bassist is the base of the whole musical pyramid. Without it, everything else doesn't fit right. To speak seriously, It' really difficult to lay down any sort of track without any of the instruments, but if the bassist knows what he's doing, then he can lay something solid down.
Of course, perhaps a guitarist has a great melody to throw out. Who knows.
Help me out people. I play the drums, so I'm definitely not first to throw down. Play something, anything. an etude of sorts... I'll throw down on it.

i have a chord progression
F/D F6 C Dm
moogoogaipan

i have a chord progression
F/D F6 C Dm
that chord progression makes more sense written this way
(D-7) (D-9) (C) (D-)
F/D is better written as D-7 because it's completely diatonic
D F A C nothing special about that... d-7 or F/D... makes more sense as d-7 because the key center seems to be Dminor.
F6 is just an inversion of D-7
F A C D same notes as above chord, just in 1st inversion.
sorry, I don't know your theory background. I'm just telling you what makes sense. Perhaps if you could record it and play it. Cause I'm playing it on piano and it doesn't sound terribly great because it's pretty much
a tonic with a vii serving the dominant function. There's no direction to that progression.

That's not how I think. I mean the lyrics and the way you sing em capture what the music wants to say. If you just put random lyrics on it before even listenin to the music, it's not going to sound the same.
But if that's what everybody wants, I'll just post some lyrics. It's a group collaboration thing afterall.

I like it, it's simple, but that's how it's supposed to be for a first time. No jazzy feel though? The quality was pretty bad so I cleaned the file and saved it as mp3 so you can listen to it without the noise and maybe use it?

surgicalgod,... the progression was good, I think it needs to be longer. Make it 8 bars long with the harmonic rhythm being 1 harmony per bar. Then in the last measure make a ii - V (with a half-note harmonic rhythm) that will resolve to I when the chorus restarts.
