View Full Version : Simplicity In Music

I was just listening to Link Wrays 'Rumble' and realised how simple it was. It sounds utterly amazing though, and the dark sleazy feel to it is extremely powerful.

What songs are simple yet are extremely powerful to you?

Judas Priest - Breaking the Law.

Damn, so good, yet three incredible easy riffs.

Most Deftones songs. I mean, nothing they do is that complex, but it is all amazing.

I'm huge fan of technical music but I have to admit that there are some bands whose songs might be easy but still difficult to be conceived. Last time I thought of it I was listening to a certain My Dying Bride song, Like Gods of the Sun I think.

That song is beautiful. I love the sampled strings in the background of the second half.

You serious G_Mac?? i know you've seen Lucious drum, not simple.

I know he's technically the most talented member of the band, but because I've only ever sat down at a drum kit 3-4 times in my life, I don't feel I'm in any position to say he's great. I mean, I wouldn't rate him up with the likes of Danny Carey or anyone like that. He's good, but I can't say he is exceptional.

Anyway, the main aspect of the band I was referring to is the Guitar and Bass. I play both, and they aren't particularly challenging. Flynn however, can pull off some pretty insane polyrythyms (I hope thats the word) at times though. I guess I should have been more specific with what I was referring to.

As for simple im going to go with the cure, the songs, musically are easy however they still manage to be extremely catchy

I prefer simplicity. I went through a stage where I was a huge fan of the really Technical stuff, but alot of it bores me now.

Technical can be cool when done right though. For example: Cynic and Psycroptic.

I really do prefer technicality in music, but there's plenty of bands out there with good, simple riffs and song structures that still sound pretty good, Norther being a prime example.

Trivium. They play some freaking great sounding riffs, but they're simple as hell.

Same with Killswitch Engage and then a ton of nu/alternative metal bands like Spineshank and Deftones.

Most classic or hard rock relieves my nerves a lot, since I grew up on a lot of it. I like stoner rock/metal because it just relaxes me, not that I smoke weed or anything. The message of any type of music has nothing to do with why I listen to it. It's the music that counts. But "simple" bands that I really love are bands like Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity (old and new, Wiseblood and Deliverance are favorites though.), Clutch, Brand New Sin, CKY, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyryd Skynyrd (of course!), System of A Down, the list goes on and on...

How can someone listen to music for technicality or simplicity? Music should be listened to because it sounds good. Simple/Tech is just an extra imo.

I could see if someone likes the extroverted sound that a technical solo might have but if it doesn't contribute that much to the song I could really care less how hard it is to play.

Honestly, some of my favorite bands are quite simple...

Lacuna Coil - Simple as hell, yet they kick epic amounts of ***.
Same with Cold, and to a lesser extent on the simple part, Sonata Arctica. Yes, their solos are quite complicated, and fast, but most of their riffs just involve one note trem picked parts and some other chords.

Don't get me started on Lacuna Coil. lol.

I like their music alot but once you get past Christina's vocals, the band is junk. IMO. The guitarists are pathetic, very sad excuse. The rest of the band isn't to steller either. Thus I still love Lacuna's old stuff. The EP, In a Reverie, and Half Life the most from their stuff.

Cold, remind me of them please... Didn't they have that song "Stupid Girl" or something like that? That singer with a shaved head?

Nightwish's guitar riffage is mostly very simple.

Amon Amarth is fairly simple.

Cradle Of Filth is beyond simple.

What was un-clear?

I enjoy their music but, I'm objective. That's all.

Read my post back again. I said talent wise, Christina is the only member of the band that's noteworthy.

The guitarists are pathetic. It's just slow droned power cords on a 7 string.
Bass and Drummer aren't exactly great either.

I listen to them because I love her voice.

I listen to Nightwish for that ultra epic sound and operatic vocals of Tarja. The beautiful keys that Thuomas does.

I like Christina Scabbia's voice (putting Comalies aside) because it doesn't sound ultra trained and overly flashy. On Comalies the vocals seemed over done at times, though it's still a great album. The EP, Half Life, In A reverie and Unleased Memories are the best.

Simple, my friend. Simple is the keyword here. Therefore, they are decent...they're one of the simpler bands I like.

Yes, Cold is the one with Stupid Girl. Sadly, they seem to have fallen off the wayside a bit with their new album...

Amon Amarth has simple riffs, yes, but the other two don't. Nightwish, listen to the Wishmaster or Oceanborn albums, and try to tell me the guitars are simple. Cradle Of Filth, same deal...their older stuff has some absolutely ungodly harmonies on it.

Plus, I like Lacuna Coil because Cristina Scabbia is possibly the hottest woman alive today. :naughty:

haha. That she could easily be. :thumb:

Umm... I listen to all the Nightwish albums all the time, including Wishmaster and Oceanborn. Maybe I should listen again. On the TV rip concerts I have of theirs, Century Child Tour and Once Tour...The guitarist isn't playing anything ultra amazing. A couple solo's though were really nice. I think he can play better then he shows in most songs.

Which CoF are you talking about? C&TB has some nice riffage. I like Dani's range and alot of the key/piano melodies.

While I'll agree some of the stuff on Once is quite simple, there's even still some hard to play stuff on that album. It gets progressively harder and harder to play the further you go back, barring Angels Fall First. Hit Oceanborn, and that album is chock full of neoclassical riffs, weird ethnic ditties, fast as hell picking, and some stuff that's completely indescribeable.

On Cradle: I dunno, anything from...say...DAHE and a bit later/earlier.

I love the Ramones. They came out at a time when people were trying to write the most complex, difficult to play guitar solo, that would put them on the map and these guys just came out with playing the same 3 chords and playing with more energy than people had in years.

I never said their weren't plenty of technical and difficult elements to their music. I think my opinion is slightly slated towards Nightwish having a simple sound because I listen to Once the most of their albums. So that sound is more mentally assoicated with them. haha. Now I'm going to spend an evening listening to all their stuff, listening for this hidden gold. :p

I used to play some CoF and it got boring because of how simple it was. Though that was very new CoF.

IMO, Two of CoF's best songs are quite simple. Lord Abortion and Her Ghost In The Fog.

Yes, I like them. I just find that sometimes it seems that the all that technicality takes away from the song. But yes there are some great solos and riffs that have been created from Suicmez.

I listen to what sounds good to me, and I listen to a lot of nu-metal and stuff, but I tend to favor technicality. My 3 favorite bands:

Fall of Troy- Very technical/progressive hardcore band.
Streetlight Manifesto-Without a doubt the most technical ska band.
Behold...the Arctopus- Insane spastic shred.

Simplicity is only bad when it sounds bad though.

Iron Maiden for sure. They have some very flashy solos but for the most part, very simple, yet brilliant songwriting.

The most technical bands I listen to are like... Opeth, Maiden, In Flames, Tool.

None of which being particulary technical at all, or having focus on technicality at least.

Over technical music bores me quite quickly these days, but I love bands where the muscians can actually play.

It can take a great band to write a good 3 or 4 (or 5) chord song.

Pretty much any mainsream music is simple....or at least simple in the aspect of learning to play. I remember MOP taking me 2 months to learn to play.

But after time a song like MOP you can learn in a day with a couple hours of practice...

Meshuggah is the only band I can think of that, no matter how good they are (one of my favourite bands), you can tell they're only being technical for the sake of, well, being technical (adding one beat to the end of a riff sounds a bit silly when it's done too much).

I don't really have an opinion, because I love bands like Electric Wizard (every song post-Dopethrone is composed of variations on two riffs, it seems) and also Cryptopsy. Hmm. Depends on the style I guess.

Both great band yeah.

I'd say atmosphere is more important than technical stuff for me, but then again my band usually writes songs with two chords in them.
