What a sweet band.
The Dead Milkmen were a joke-ish, almost novelty pop-punk band from Philadelphia in the '80s. They wrote many great humorous songs such as:
Bitchin' Camaro
Rod - Hey Jack, what's happenin'?
Joe - Oh, I don't know.
Rod - Well, rumor around town says you think you might be heading down to the shore.
Joe - Uh, yeah, I think I'm goin' down to the shore.
Rod - Whatcha gonna do down there?
Joe - Uh, I don't know, play some video games, buy some Def Leppard t-shirts.
Rod - Hey, don't forget to get your Motley Crue t-shirt, y'know, all proceeds go to get their lead singer out of jail.
Joe - Uh huh.
Rod - Hey, you gonna check out the Sandbar while you're there?
Joe - Uh, what's the Sandbar?
Rod - Oh, it's this place that lets sixteen year-old kids drink.
Joe - Oh, cool.
Rod - Y'know who's gonna be there?
Joe - Uh, who?
Rod - My favorite cover band, Crystal ****.
Joe - Oh.
Rod - Yeah, they do a Doors show, you'd be really impressed, in fact, it goes a little like this:
Love me two times baby
Love me twice today
Love me two times girl
Cause I got AIDS
Love me two times baby, once for tomorrow, once cause I got AIDS
Joe - Wow, Pretty good Jim Morrison impersonation there.
Rod - Yeah, I hope those guys have a good sense of humor and don't take us to court.
Joe - Uh, what's the court?
Rod - Never mind that,
Joe - Oh, you mean like the People's Court?
Rod - Well, that's another story; the important thing here is you gotta ask me how I'm gonna get down to the shore.
Joe - Uh, how you gonna get down to the shore?
Rod - Funny you should ask, I've got a car now.
Joe - Oh wow, how'd you get a car?
Rod - Oh my parents drove it up here from the Bahamas.
Joe - You're kidding!
Rod - I must be, the Bahamas are islands, okay, the important thing now, is that you ask me what kind of car I have.
Joe - Uh, what kinda car do ya' got?
Rod - I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO!
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I ran over my neighbors
BITCHIN CAMARAO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Now it's in all the papers.
My folks bought me a BITCHIN CAMARO with no insurance to match;
So if you happen to run me down, please don't leave a scratch.
I ran over some old lady one night at the county fair;
And I didn't get arrested, because my dad's the mayor.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Doughnuts on your lawn
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Tony Orlando and Dawn
When I drive past the kids, they all spit and cuss,
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO and they have to ride the bus.
So you'd better get out of my way, when I run through your yard;
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO;
And an Exxon credit card.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Hey, man where ya headed?
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I drive on unleaded.
And many others.
So, discuss The Dead Milkmen :D

Big Lizard is good too but Beelzebubba contains most of their classics and I don't think it really has a bad track.
Life is **** is such a sad song after what happened with Dave Blood. It's also a surprisingly serious song.

I love the Dead Milkmen so much. So many great and funny songs. My old band used to cover Punk Rock Girl (minus the accordians or whatever), which was fun. It's the love song we can all relate to, c'mon.
Their bassist came up with some kickass basslines. He's one of my favorites. I play a little bass, and the reason i got into it was that bassline in Bitchin' Camaro.

There should be an official thread for the Milkmen. You can't say it wouldn't get action, because clearly they're a very commonly liked band. If it doesn't hang around the first page, then oh well, since the only other one that does is the SM/C22/BotAR thread.
AIRIC
03-06-2006, 02:31 PM
There's official threads for bands that people frequently make threads about. So many officials is annoying, and I highly doubt a band like this would get much action. The reason the C22/SM/BotAR and LoC/CV/CRS7 is because there's so much to talk about, with this it would be restricted to one band and would die in 2 weeks.
Rise Me Up
03-06-2006, 03:08 PM
Maybe if we keep this thread going, we can eventually make it official.
AIRIC
03-06-2006, 03:09 PM
I highly doubt it since there's no need to make this "official" and it will eventually just turn in to spam.

Are you saying he just felt like killing himself? Usually people commit suicide for a specific reason.
sketchyjoe

I think he was clinically depressed and didn't tell anyone any particular reason for it. The interview he did with Mark Prindle (his last) doesn't give any hints about it.

Dave Blood, otherwise known as Dave Schulthise, was the bassist for the punk band Dead Milkmen. He helped form the band in 1983 along with fellow pseudonymous musicians Joe Jack Talcum, Dean Clean, and Rodney Anonymous. Prior to this he was a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Purdue University.
Allegedly, he tuned the strings of his bass guitar, in order from lowest to highest, D E A D, to match the name of the band.
He stopped playing in the early 1990s after the band broke up. Dave would never play again as the result of developing tendonitis in both hands.
Of Yugoslavian extraction, Dave then travelled to study in Serbia, but in the wake of the NATO bombing campaign there he was forced to return to the US.
In late 2003, he told an interviewer his favorite bassists included Charles Mingus.
Dave committed suicide March 10, 2004 at age 47.
I have a feeling his bass was tuned normally, although it's a cool myth.

The Dead Milkmen was a satirical punk rock/pop band that formed in 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band consisted of Joe Jack Talcum (Joe Genaro; guitar, vocals), Dave Blood (Dave Schulthise; bass), Dean Clean (Dean Sabatino; drums), and Rodney Anonymous (Rodney Linderman; vocals, synth).
There are several stories about how they got their name. "The Dead Milkmen" apparently existed as Joe's concept before the band became a reality. The band has claimed the name comes from a character in Toni Morrison's book Song of Solomon ("Milkman Dead"), or from one of Genaro's high school projects. In the United Kingdom and other British Commonwealth nations, there was a persistent rumour that the band's name was derived from the first episode of the sitcom Filthy, Rich and Catflap, in which Rik Mayall's character "accidentally" kills several milkmen - but since that was not made until after the band had existed for several years, it's almost certainly untrue. The most appropriate explanation is that the name, like the band's songs, is satire: a reference to the punk band Dead Kennedys. This joke is manifest because the Milkmen adopted absurd stage names much like the Kennedys' Jello Biafra, Klaus Flouride, etc.
The Dead Milkmen's songs found moderate success on alternative on college radio stations. Videos, notably "Punk Rock Girl", even found their way onto MTV in the late 1980s. Topics for their music include satire on the 1980s music scene, toxic waste, jellyfish afterlifes, UFOs, conspiracy theories, and cover bands.
Irreverent absurdity fueled their initial popularity, particularly among college DJs. However, this genre was somewhat abandoned with the 1992 release of Soul Rotation, a much more subtle album.
After the Dead Milkmen went on indefinite hiatus in 1994, Genaro and Sabatino formed a new band, Butterfly Joe. Sabatino was also in the punk rock bands Narthex, Big Mess Orchestra, and Hunger Artists. Genaro was in a band called Touch Me Zoo. Linderman was in a band called Burn Witch Burn. Schulthise left music in the early 1990s and committed suicide in 2004.
The Dead Milkmen took the stage again for two consecutive nights in November 2004 at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia to play a show in memory of Dave Schulthise. Proceeds were donated to a variety of mental health organizations and to a Serbian monastery that Schulthise supported.

He didn't commit suicide. Someone murdered Dave Schulthise!

It's been suggested that one of the reasons he killed himself was because he was unable to live in Serbia anymore.
