There's about one right away to scream and a million wrong ways. Research it (look in Merkaba's threads), and don't listen to anyone who says it's bad. It's not. The only place where I could of it being "bad" is if you were an opera or classical singer or something, because in that case, you wouldn't want to train your voice to use any rasp. So yeah.

It depends on what kind of screams you want to do. Most likely you're referring to falsetto screams, which is what pretty much all screams are. Merkaba covers that very well. Or if you're referring to the death metal screams/growls, that's very similar but lower, in my own experience I've found that it's best to learn falsetto screams first then do the growls. The growls are a bit harder to do, and something like a whisper voice, with cords isolated, but with alot of diaphragm and rasp.
If by any chance you're referring to Cradle of Filth type screams, yes those are bad because he breathes inward. A technique which may (or may not) sound cool, but over time I've heard that it can paralyze your vocal cords. I've heard it from too many people who "messed up their voice" doing it, so I'd stay away from that.

Personally, I developed a certain screaming technique while singing along to Korn's "Let's do this now." I was trying to emulate Davis's voice during the screaming part and a unique sound emerged, Like two voices at once. Half of it was rasp, just air. And the other half was heavily and gutterally projected high notes.

But the thing is I smoke (not too frequently, like a pack a week,) and my voice has always had kind of a natural rasp.

Anyway, just aim for the note, and get it out there! Just experiment with your voice; it really helps.
