punk: an attitude or a style of music?

i've been wondering this since i had my last thread closed because the band were not deemed 'punk' enough.

i have never seen punk as a specific rigid style of music, i dont think that it was started for people to wear studded jackets and grow mohegan’s.

isn't it much more punk to say '**** off im not punk?' :confused:
