1. Male

2. 16-18.

3. Lots. Destroyer, Head Like A Kite, and Oh No! Oh My! mainly.

4. Sometimes.

5. Not really. Musicians are outspoken about their little problems with corporations that destroy the environment and treat employees unfairly, and since most musicians tend to be liberal, they usually have quite a bit to say about the other side, but that's not in the music. It's just something they talk about on their websites or in concerts (i.e., Colin Meloy getting everyone to boo the conservative gentlemen in his crowd when he asked everyone to sit down except Republicans).

6. Listening to the music I listen to has certainly dictated and influenced certain areas of myself. I like to wear tight clothing and the occasional pea coat, which I didn't like before. I started making my own t-shirts using stencils. And I like to think I'm the best when it comes to music because I've heard of bands other people haven't and know more pointless crap about music than most, which I use to bore people to death every now and then. I insult people based on the music they like, and if they listen to what I listen, I call them a pseudointellectual wanna-be hipster queer and accuse them of only being into it because it's trendy. I'm a hipster.

2) Age 19-21

3) What bands are you listening to at the moment?

Gang Starr, Belle and Sebastian, Half Japanese, Bob Dylan, Jeru the Damaja, Kate Bush

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?

No.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

Perhaps more. Pop music has generally applied style over substance and because of that and society's reckoning of "cool," the rebel is an easy archetype for an artist to slide into. At the same time, a certain amount of this rebellion is superficial. I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before by someone else from some other generation, though. The effect this kind of rebel talk, however, probably has a smaller effect on the music listening audience in general today. No matter what level of sincerity an artist has, I think the pop music listeners of this generation are more apathetic to politics in comparison to others. But that's another question, I'd suppose.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

Very little. I dress like a communist but I have no issues with commercialism and capitalism. I like flamboyant music, but I perfer earth tones.

Questionnaire

1) Are you… Male

2) Age 16-18

3) What bands are you listening to at the moment?

Franz ferdinand, editors, bloc party, panic! at the disco, devilsoldhissoul

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?

it tries to but sometimes it doesnt do it succesfully, bloc party tried it with "price of gas" and that worked quite well, in terms of political context. So i guess its a yes for the fact that it tries to

Yes

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

No because there isnt as much to rebel against, except the comerciallity of music, which doesnt rebel at all, if u get me

No

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

Its always assumed that emo kids always listen to emo music and indie ppl always listen to indie, that isnt always the case. the way u dress can be influenced by the ppl who make the music u like, but musical tastes do cross boundaires, for examplei listen to the beegess sometimes, doesnt mean i wander round in white flairs and frilly shirts all the time does it. I also listen to some heavy hardcore/emo so, musical tastes can have alot of width.

2) Age 19-21

3) What bands are you listening to at the moment?

Robert Pollard, Sιbastien Roux, Oval, Mogwai, Supersilent

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?

Sometimes, yes. This is really a case by case basis, because all the music I enjoy doesn't necessarily adhere to the same beliefs.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

No. I see the importance of rebellion greatly diminishing. Music may talk against world leaders or political stances, but the idea of rebellion for the sake of rebellion is somewhat juvenile and fading.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

I like to think that my decisions in music and dress to be independent from each other.

3. Wipers, Sebadoh, Rodan, Daughters, SunO)))

4. Depends on the song/artist. That question is kinda...crap.

5. In the underground it seems to be just as rebellious as it always has. In the mainstream yea, no talk of rebellion at all.

6. No, I dress pretty nondescriptly. I have a few bands shirts though.

4) Eh, not really. GY!BE has often expressed hate towards corporate multinationals, calling them oligarchies. I've seen videos on stuff like that in one of my classes at school, but I'm still generally apathetic.

5) If there is rebellion anywhere it's sucking off the successes of the 70's.

6) Not really. I have a ton of Smashing Pumpkins shirts but I hardly get around to listening to them anymore. I wear them anyway because it's clothing.

1. male

2. 19-21

3. R.E.M. , The Verve, The Strokes, Pearl Jam, Blur ect...

4. this depends on the band. In many cases I find myself agreeing on many the points conveyed by the band and in other cases I don't.

5. No this doesn't seem to be the case. The 60s and 70s had a lot of things to rebel against, and although in recent years there's been some resurgence of this (probably due to the war in Iraq and Bush's policies), it's not quiet up to the level of past decades.

6. well...since hip-hop culture has spawned their own style of clothing (which many people my age have adopted regardless of race) I'd say my taste in music has steered me away from that. Besides that though, I don't dress any different than most 20 something white kids I know. I like the occasional vintage style shirt if that counts.

3) What bands are you listening to at the moment?

Hypatia Lake, Sunset Rubdown, Hella, Motorpsycho...but this is just lately.

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?

Sometimes, with some of the music and bands. Sometimes I disagree with a point. Sometimes I don't.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

It's more subdued and less...Sex Pistols-ish. It's not really 'anarchy/rebellion', but some bands are still 'sticking it to the man' in their own quiet but powerful little ways.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

It doesn't. People wouldn't have a clue what music I listen to, apart from my friends maybe. I have like one band shirt, though.

Holcombe Waller, November's Doom, Radiohead, Failure, Cafe Tacuba, Mountain Goats, The Gathering, Woods of Ypres,Devin Townsend Band, Songs Ohia

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?

Yes, some of it does. Most music I listen to isn't agenda-based though. I wouldn't listen to certain music where the musicians promote or hold viewpoints that are completely distasteful to me, eg. NSBM.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

The previous decades are overrated in their anarchy. We've just as much rebellion now as back then.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

Uh, band t-shirts a lot. Though I end up dressing darker because I like goth girls, it isnt necessarily a reflection on my musical taste.

Yes, for the most part. Some music doesn't have to convey a point of view though, it just has to be there.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?

Ummm....maybe

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

Maybe? I just wear a band t-shirt and pants, that's about it. Sometimes I like to wear a suit though. So I guess not.

3) What bands are you listening to at the moment?

Elliott Smith, Thin Lizzy, Dire Straits, Death, Rory Gallagher, Kreator and Aesop Rock

4) Do you think that music you listen to conveys a relevant view point on which you agree?
I don't usually listen to music for viewpoints, but after listening to punk for some time I must say that I usually listen to music that I agree with.

5) Do you think that music today has as much a sense of anarchy/rebellion as previous decades?
Popular music, no there are VERY few (if any) popular acts that are pushing boundaries and most of them are in it for the cash.

However, many underground scenes are still rebellious, but that's always been the same.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

I dress in what's comfortable. I often listen to music that I am NOT comfortable with at first to expand horizons and such.

So really, aside from a few band teeshirts music has no relation to the way I dress.

No. No-one's really rebellious these days.

6) How much do you feel that the way you dress and portray yourself, depicts your musical taste?

Kinda....I mean, I have a Black Sabbath shirt, and that portrays that I listen to Black Sabbath. I have a Bob Dylan shirt, and that portrays that I listen to Bob Dylan. But other than that, nah, don't really go out of my way for that kinda of stuff.
