Yes, I said guitar, but after making a thread int eh guitar forum I realized they didn't know too much about it.

I've been wanting to learn this technique, but there is one thing that is confusing me.

I hit the low E string with my thumb, and bounce back off but sometimes it makes little to no sound, but other times it sounds like I did it right.

The problem is, I'm not sure what I'm doing right/wrong, can someone here possibly help me out as to how you are supposed to hit the string with your thumb?

Hold your thumb basically parallel to the string, and hit with the side of your knuckle. The most important part is the speed you get off. You want to bounce off the string as quickly as you can so you don't mute it.

I think slapping on guitar is crazy hard, to narrow string spacing and too thin strings.

ah, that was my major problem then, I was hitting it with the pad of my thumb as opposed to the side of my knuckle.

Thanks alot for the quick reply.

No problem. I am sure someone else on here can give you way better advice though.

yea heres the video of reggie slapping on guitar

again.. like previously posted... just make sure you bounce your thumb off fast, the hole concept is kinda like how a piano works.. the hammers in a piano bounce off the strings created the sound..

its more about the release than the initial hit, and another thing, make sure when you release you leave your and in a relativly good position to pop, dont jsut slap the string and pull off liek 2 feet away from your guitar

That's amazing.

I've always heard about reggie and victor, but never actually heard them but that was insane.

IMO reggie has horrible technique in that vid, it seem like more senseless wanking rather tha impressive guitar slapping. i think theres a Kaki King vid thats a pretty good example of guitar slap, idk what song it is tho.

Slap guitar is harder because, since guitar strings generally vibrate faster than bass ones, you have to pull your thumb away faster after you hit the string. You always want to be hitting the string with the hardest part of your thumb knuckle though (provided that it's comfortable).

I'd say watch Justin King. He plays an acoustic but he's insane anyways. :)

Justin King is overrated, just because some people saw one video of his and everything thinks he's god. Preston plays the style much much better.

Enver Izmalov does some pretty good slapping, but if you find anything of his it's most likely going to be only tapping.

Reggie Wooten is, rather unsuprisingly, Victor Wootens brother, and taught him how to double thumb

and for Justing King? Google (http://www.google.com)

DDM: probly you already got your question answered but just in case . .

Sometimes you'll get pretty much no sound when slapping your E string because maybe your bass its strings to far away from the fretboard, try adjusting the bridge to lower your strings a little bit that will make the slap sound even more percusive and ultimately make your E string sound better .

Good Luck !
