to get this started, i had a really weird dream last night (and yes, this does have to do with the bass). in my dream, i built this weird custom bass, and i remember it had really awesome tone (at least in my dream it did :p). when i woke up, i immediately drew a picture of it and wrote down the specs, which were:
24 frets
35" scale neck
4-1 headstock
1 neck jazz pickup (passive)
1 precision pickup (passive)
1 bridge soapbar pickup (passive)
5-strings
1 volume/tone knob for each pickup
i guess it would look something like this (sorry for the bad paint job):

what do you think it would cost to make this? and what are your thoughts on it?

well all u rlly came up with is a pup configuration. one very similar to the one ive been planing on making for about 6months now cept mine would have a MM in the bridge. and considering you supplied no details as to what want in this custom its tough to say how much it would cost. as of now my estimate would be aslow as 500 if ur willing to do alot of the work urself. but it could be as a few thousand

Wouldnt it sound better with the jazz by the bridge so you could get a good growl?

Mines still better.

^^^ yeah that could work
remember this isn't a set decision on any of the details or anything, its just a thought. and yes a MM by the bridge would be good too.

Depending on what wood you want, and the brands for pickups, electronics, and hardware, I would say minimum $1000. Go to www.warmoth.com or other such sites, and see how much it will cost for body and parts.

a MM in the bridge with a coil splitter would essentially be the same thing, and yeild sufficient growl.
a good set of pups of this type would prolly be around $225. plus a good eq would be at least $100. might i suggest the aguilar OBP-1 or 3 since u can wire them to accept 3 volume knobs instead of complex 5way switches(which woulnt allow for all combos)
oh and i just realized u wanted this to be a 5er, only problem with this is that P-pups dont often come in five string verisons. u may have to use a splitcoil soapbar.

But how much would it cost for a manufacturer to drill another hole?
They would charge like... $1000, and only for that hole xP.
Why don't you ask JP?

well if smart u dont need extra holes beacuse u can stack two pots on top of each other.
my plans used the four holes standard in a MIA style jazz. and that includes 3volume controls, a passive tone and a 3 band eq with variable mid freq. control.
