Well a good friend of mine, and by far the best drummer in town and the surrounding area. has gone to our music store and purchased a pair of.............joey jordison signiture Ahead Sticks..........please try not to passout......but yea he picked them up because he's always wanted to try them.

I messed around with them and they actually are really lite, much lighter than the 5A sticks i use. So that made me think. What size sticks do yall recomend for playing heavier music? i need something that wont break, but i need something lighter than the 5A's im useing.

What 5A's are you using, might I ask?
Generally the heavier music calls for a bigger, heavier stick...
Suck it up and switch to a 2B.
I'm a girl and I can do it.
Be ashamed.

Try 85a i belive they are smaller and still quite robust also try vic firth 7a's i've used em and they do last.

Leave him be pespi it's not his fault

The Joey sigs are similar to 7As I think, but theyre metal so they wont break whilst playing metal music like a wooden stick.

Aheads suck.

Anyone who would use them is either paid too, or doesn't know jack about the instrument of drums.

My Promark 7As are lasting quite a while. The tips are nearly worn down, and they just now started looking kind of like they might be breaking in the next few weeks or so, after several years.

7A's?!

Come on man, toothpicks. Play some drums! You should be shedding through at least 5B's.

You tell em big J man lol.

Personally i use Gadd Sig's and Buddy Sig's. light but strong enough for rock

I probably haven't been breaking them because I rotate through several pairs of varying sizes.

my main problem is that i bought like 25 pairs of generic sticks from a guitar center, and i think it may be that brand, they just dont feel as good. and the tips break all the time. i have some Vic Firth 2B's and they actually feel better and lighter than my guitar center ones. So i think guitar center just is just qualified mainly for mmm i dunno Guitars? rather than drums. and i have some 2B by promark and they feel slightly different than the vic firths, but then again there made for marching indoor, not drumset. So overall ill just have to save and buy the expensive sticks rather than the cheaper ones.

Generic sticks... that's why they suck.

Meh, for heavy music... 5B. Or 2B. I like 5B Jap Oak. Those things can take a beating.

The steve gadd sticks are very durable and quite light. One pair has lasted me about 8 months so far.

Ive never seen the big deal with sticks myself. I just get some Rogers 5Bs for $1.80 a pair & go to town on em!!! They last as long as any other stick Ive paid 3x for

I play metal and went from those Vic Firth Rock Nylons to the Pro-Mark 707s. They're Ed Shaunessy's model... and I don't think I'm going to change anytime soon. I love the wooden ball tip. And they're oak so they last.

haha just buy a bunch of Vic Firths that got messed over in production for like $1 a pair, that's what i do!

I used to play on 747s, until i came to realize how damn thick those are. It's really no wonder I was breaking my zbts. I currently use pro-mark 727s (basically the 747s, but much thinner). when available, I use VF 8DN, closest thing to the 727, but it's not made out of oak, which i really dont like. Unnecessarily heavy, IMO

I use Zildjian something-or-anothers. It looks like it says "Louilok Gustu" on them and the bottom half is like dipped in rubberit looks/feels like. Theres also this like indent in the handle. I cant find a picture of it. Please help identify.

EDIT: Found em'

I use Vater Fusions(just bought them after milkmit recommended them on a thread. Thanks!) and they're great. I normally, i go for feel rather than weight and sizing.

John Tempesta sig. sticks from Zildjian. They kick ***. Brilliant for rock but not too heavy and also look amazing. They are also dipped all over and have wonderful grip.

something bigger and lighter is all the maple sticks out there, those are my favorites that i've found. Vic firth has a line of them called American custom I think, Vater and Pro Mark have maple sticks as well

Adrian Young Sigs. Nuff said.

i use vater "5A Los Angeles"

nice and light, with a bit more weight at the front... i think tommy lee aheads are built the same way, but they're heavier and made of metal...

i used to use 5b's, but i find i have more control with 5a's and less blisters, haha.

Not true, aheads save cymbals because of those pesky wood particles that get on them don't you remember that thread?!

Not related to durability, but I just bought a pair of Vic Firth Peter Erskine signature sticks and they're quite wonderful.

My favorite sticks, I have about 5 pairs. The tips break off very easily and they don't get enough volume for the ride for rock.

Which, in order to maintain the same size, would make the stick heavier.

Why the **** would anyone be stupid enough to use metal sticks? You'd end up spending more on cymbals than sticks that way.

Also: Use 2Bs. Jesus. If you're playing metal you should be using small trees.

crazyguy832
03-05-2006, 04:37 PM
No.

Dense Sticks = Stronger:thumb:
Density = mass/volume

It is therefore possible for a 5B to weigh the same as a 2B. Naturally, if something is denser, it WILL be heavier. If this is the case, then yes, the more dense stick would be stronger.

That's why I always reccomend Jap Oak sticks.

If you are buying sticks based on longivity... then you have totally missed the point.

Drum sicks are an accepted destructed part of the instrument, like strings on a guitar.

Buy your sticks based on feel, playability and so forth. Any and every stick will break... the cost difference in longivity is very minimal over the long run. Combined with buying in bulk once you have found "your" stick, leaves pretty much no reason to ever sacrefice personal feel and taste for longivity in wear.

Well, for metal, you're gonna want to use heavier sticks. For one, its hard to get the necessary volume with light sticks, they won't last, and also, you won't get the kinda sound you're looking for, not enough meat. At least a 5b, I personally use Promark 2bs or Rocks.

I love 5Bs, I will buy some in bulk next time as my VFs tips split.

Very nice though, I recommend them to anyone as I find 5As a bit too thin. Of course theres nothing wrong with them but for light rock or even hard rock, 5Bs are great.

Josiah
03-06-2006, 12:23 PM
The tips split because you hit them against something other then a drum head or flat cymbal surface.

You're catching a rim, the edge of a cymbal, etc something somewhere.

That only happens at school, could it be to do with the angles of the cymbals?

The ride is almost 90 degrees, could this be doing it? Also, there is a cymbal that is cracked, I think maybe hitting the jagged edges on the crack do it, am I right?

To Crazy Guy, I only like the alll black VFs, I dont know what they are and the white VFs, Lang, Buddy and someone else.

The only thing I like about the sigs. is that you can get some nice colours instead of the boring plain natural wood. Thats partly why I get them, the other is the feel, obviously.

To TTTSNB - I can yes but it is kinda comfortable but if it is ruining my sticks, id have it how I have mine at my house. Also, theres limited space so if I put it flat like how I prefer it, it will bang off things as theres a table right next to it and I only like playing the bell so its hard to reach when its high up.

Drum Phil
03-06-2006, 12:45 PM
With my Adrian Young Sigs, i find them to have a longer reach and a nicer feel than normal sticks. With my Weckls, i like the lighter weight and the barrel tip.

The Tre Cools were simply for experimental purpouses. They're quite heavy.

Talos
03-06-2006, 12:47 PM
I like the Lang sigs, despite being like baseball bats I feel theyre great for building endurance and you feel safe knowing that they wont break. They're also the best looking sticks ive seen.

Jap Oak 5B.

:chug:

From church to metal and everything in-between. It's ALL in the player. Plus those things stand up to rimshots SO MUCH better than hickory.

I have a pair of Adrian Ygs, Can't say I like them too much, The tip is rather nasty feeling I think on the ride, and the red seems to stick on the cymbals. I use them for snare workout though, Rather heavy I feel.

i just ues the Vater 5b so i dont use to much money in buying sticks, i do break them way to fast purposely...but for shows i like what crazyguy said. the Jap Oak 5B, as he said very versatile.
