View Full Version : A Few Things

Hey I got a few things to show and ask.

Travis Wannabee (http://www.theflamingmonkeys.com/david.html)
OCDP Drums, looks like him, uses Barker sticks etc.

Also, the main point of this. Im looking for a ride that will give me a nice pingy sound, something quite quiet as well.

Im open to all brands but do not have any money, this cymbal will be from a low line range of cymbals ie PST5s and the likes. What would be the best for this?

Also, would Aheads be good fro light practice at home and use at school? As my sticks break everytime I have practice, only at the tip form hitting the ride and hats too hard.

Thanks guys, Ollie.

Pingy ride? AA-Metal X is pingy, I hear, but quiet? Dude, volume is ALL YOU. Low line... bah, I dunno, sorry. :p

Oh, and that kids a moron.

As for the practice... dude... then don't hit that hard. Aheads for "light" practice? Is this the same practice that breaks your wooden sticks?

Edit: And their music sucks donkey balls.

No, when I play at school I have to play loud to make sure im heard over guitars and vocals.

This is what breaks my tips, I use the ride a lot as I like to mix it up

crazyguy832

Ah.

How often do you break sticks? And are you sure you're using proper technique?

Aheads... I'd only ever use them for pad work; that'd be it. And personal defence, ya know. You could pass them as a musical aid and possibly get them onto a plane.

Talos
03-03-2006, 04:59 PM
Well my teacher says my technique is fine I just need to sort my grip which is what ive now done.

The tips are breaking regularly, I think im hitting too hard but I cant be heard on the ride apart from in the bass solo.

I thought theyd be ideal, I dont hit hard at home so I dont need to worry about my cymbals braking :D

Mic your kit if you can't be heard.

And, yes... you still do...

If you hit your nose "not that hard" with a metal tube it's probably still going to break.

Talos
03-03-2006, 05:04 PM
Yeah but light practice I mean very light. I rarely crash or anything, I just like practice rudiments, fills and beats.

I think too many people just follow the crowd in saying they break cymbals, youve said youve had experience but many people just go along with it.

crazyguy832
03-03-2006, 05:05 PM
I'm not saying I've had experience. I've never used Aheads. Because of this forum, though, I never will.

All I can is you must hit VERY hard. I've never broken a single pair (or even chipped a pair of Hickory sticks more than what's normal with a low amount of rimshots). Get a Jap Oak stick; they're stronger than normal.

hmm my earth ride has a ping to it. but also a zildjian sweet ride might suite you.

I cant  No one sells Oak sticks around me, only Vic Firth, Vater and Stagg. Nova in one and none of them have Pro Marks or any Jap Oak sticks.

How often do you replace the sleeves on Aheads?

Ping ride quite cool, Don't touch Aheads they suck balls.

What i wanna know is how does a band that unoriginal with poor skills manage to get that level of recognition. Just why?

Talos

Touche, I hate people like that daddy buys them an expensive kit and the think they're 'IT' i mean that snare sounded horrible in one of their gay songs, I mean i'm in what most would call a classic rock band and a jazz band and in neither of those are we recognised. hell my jazz band has put out our own EP through a local company and sold them all, are we on national telly, NO.

Rant overfor now

Wow, I'd die... Pro-Mark = my love.

Don't other brands have Jap Oak sticks?

And haven't you been listening? DON'T GET AHEADS. If you actually play soft with them, a pair of wooden sticks will last 1 year + if you play soft with them (and use them only for practice).

David Wearn is the youngest member of the band. He is also a lunatic. Where Max and Chris are calculating, David is indiscriminate in the anarchy he effortlessly conjures. But don’t let the fool fool you. He’s a dedicated drummer. If David’s not shouting, fighting or gyrating he’s practising his chops. The only drummers who can match David for flamboyance are Blink 182’s protogé, Travis Barker and mad sticks man Tré Cool, of Green Day. David meticulously unlocks the secrets behind their playing and through his unrelenting practice regime interprets their styles in his own unique and explosive way

What a load of bollocks.

I was just about to quote that :smoke:

Max McNally, lead singer and bass player, writes lyrics for the songs and gets the band’s message across. With influences like the Clash and the Sex Pistols, Max is deft at writing about his experiences growing up in a neighbourhood where there is nothing to do except skate or watch TV. But Max is fortunate. Anarchistic mayhem has a tendency to find him wherever he goes and so there is rarely peace, quiet or boredom for Max to deal with

Bless this guys soul for saying that

So about the stick situation, I only hit the ride on the bell and I only usually hit the hats on the bell. I never hit it in the side as I now that will cut through my sticks, so Nylon tips me thinks, I have 7ANs but I know theyll break easily due to the narrow shoulder and neck. So I will look into Vic Firth and Vater nylon tipped sticks, which ones are better? Zildjian, Vater and Vic Firth?

Ive never had Vaters but on my VF and Zildjians the tip split on both.

Zildjian sticks are crap. Absolutely horrible, as far as I'm concerned.

If you want a strong stick, Pro-Mark 5B Jap Oak. But both Vater and Vic Firth are also amazing.

It was childish i do admit but its the best way to describe it at like 1 in the mornin. but honestly would you not get a smaller guitar so it isn't bigger than you?

The Flaming or Arctic? *sarcasm* Hmmm, now thats a tough one.

TS: use the shoulder of the stick to play the ride bell. Chad Smith Signatures are good for riding on the bell.

If you are using sticks like 7a's for heavy hitting that would be a problem. Why buy ahead for quiet practise?
just buy normal sticks. if your only going to be doing quiet practise with them.

are you ssure you are wanting to buy aheads for the right reason and not to fi in with rejects from your school?

Talos
03-05-2006, 08:49 AM
I dont know anyone who uses aheads so no.

At school I play hard to be heard over the other instruments, this is what is breaking my sticks. The sticks that have broke 5As and 5Bs so theyre not too thin. They only split when I play the ride and hi hats as I usually see bits of wood fly off.

I have my Lang sigs. I doubt theyll break to easily so Ill give them a go.

Do you think I should use a different tip? Would that minimize the damage done to the tips?

SkaRabbit
03-05-2006, 09:03 AM
lower your hihats. angle your ride about 5 degrees towards you. make sure your throne is high. minimise the angles youa re playing on will stop sticks cracking.

Talos
03-05-2006, 09:05 AM
Ill give it a shot, cheers man.

Would the shape of the tip play a part in this or not really?

You know you don't need the best stuff to sound great...That idiot probably does'nt even know what jazz is. Anarchy, yeah ****ing right.. Those guitars look stupid on them too! Hah what a bunch of main-stream losers..

As for the cymbal, I would go for a Zildjian Sweet Ride...Or any Zildjian for that matter..

That's what everyone says. But you know what? Kids these days are so ridiculously underestimated. It is a common belief at my school (bunch of ignorat prats they are) that a child won't know what sex is until they are about 13.
