Why is Nirvana seen better than pearl jam?
Pearl Jam is better lyrically, vocally , and musically(listen to "Alive" and prove me wrong)
Better is opinion, maybe someone else doesnt like those lyrics or vocal/instrumentations.

Yay, Pearl Jam thread.

Got into this band again after about a year of them boring me, they have some classic songs. As Deconstruction said though it is all oppinion, you shouldn;t really say that one band IS better than another on a discussion forum (it won;t win you any friends). The lyrics in Alive and Jeremy are top notch.

My second favourite band. I picked up Yield today. I can't say enough about them. Favourite of their albums is No Code. Favourite song is Rearviewmirror, followed by In My Tree.

Pearl Jam is incredibly well known. In my books, any band that gets frequent radio/mtv air play is completely mainstream. Hence, Pearl Jam is immensely popular.

God, I'm a PJ freak.

This one time, my dad sold a black telecaster on eBay. Since the guy who bought it lived in Washington too, he met my dad at Starbucks to pick it up. After they were done, the guy goes "Hey, I'm in this band. You want some free stuff?" So he gives him this box full of Pearl Jam merchandise. It was Eddie freaking Vedder. Now we get free tickets to all their shows (We've already been to two), he played my dad's guitar on TV, and we still have his voice on our answering machine. Truely bitchhin.

Yeah, Nevermind just sold very quickly, there's a definite difference between how many sold and how fast they sold.

I actually pulled out Ten the other day, I had forgotten that it was actually pretty good.

"Ten" is the only album of theirs I can really get into. I'm not a fan of the band as people at all, especially Mr. Vedder, who I think is quite egocentric. Any band that will change their sound from the high-quality and extremely accessible awesomeness of the first album to a more willfully inaccessible one just because Kurt Cobain said they were "corporate grunge" over their guitar solos doesn't deserve much of my respect.

"I wish I could remix 'Ten' to take some of the reverb off it"

Talking about Eddie Vedder reminds me of all the famous muscians from my town. I mean my town has like 25,000 people in it. Anyways I'll name them. Jimmy Chamberlin from the Smashing Pumpkins lives in my town. Peter Wentz from Fall Out Boy is from my town. Some drummer for this band Garbage lives in my town and Eddie Vedder grew up in the town right next to me. I havn't met any of them, but my brother's friend is family friends with the Chamberlins and my friend a couple years ago met him on halloween. It's pretty cool.

woo hoo^

i really dislike when pople get into better than discussions. there is no way to juge music other then your own personal preferance. populr music is poplar becase people like it. nothing in pop music is based upon skill or talent but more so on the fact that poeple wanna hear it. pj is a fvourtie of mine bu trying to say one is better then the other is just dumb.

Led-ZeppelinIV

Not neccessarily. Music is popular because record promoters like it, and then most people are too lazy to look for an undergroud scene that they might have liked better than their "favorite" band they hear on the radio.

Back in the early 90's i dont think that either band was more popular then the other. But Kurt Cobain helped rock become more mainstream and Nevermind was released about a year and a half or so before Ten. Also Pearl Jam wasn't too mainstream from about 1996-2003 because they never released a music video, until they did some kind of animated video for "Do The Evolution".

I love both the bands and listen too their music all the time. They are both unbeleivable bands in my opinion.

Pearl Jam were my favourite band for a long time. Vs, No Code and Vitalogy were on constant rotation and I still love them now, and a lot of Yield. In My Tree is fantastic, as is Off He Goes, Rearview Mirror, Tremor Christ and so many more

Ten, i've heard too many times and Binaural and Riot Act didn't really do anything for me. I'm not keen on the new single either, Ed's voice is not what it used to be, and it sounds too much like their last two albums. I'm still excited for it coming out though and i'm hoping it's awesome.

well, radio is the easiest way to hear music and the underground scene are good only to those who are industrious enough to seek it...

Ahh finally a Pearl Jam thread. I'm a big fan and my fav songs are W.M.A (obviously) and Corduroy. I think World Wide Suicides really good, but I had to listen to it almost 10 times. Pearl Jam sold more, but Nirvana had more credibility and were seen as the innovators.
BTW Eddies voice is getting deeper and rougher with age and so he has to strain it a bit to make it sound less gruff...IMO

Yeah Pearl Jam are one of my favorites. I love all of their work, unlike many bands, they progress artistically throughout each album.

Their earlier stuff is alot easier to get into but I find Vedder's lyrics are best throughout the later stuff. Some lyrics on Riot Act are nothing short of brilliant.

Kyle
04-04-2006, 06:44 PM
^^Oh yeah definately, from Vedders lyrics are consistently brilliant throughout though. the lyrics in Alive and Jeremy are amazing. I'd have to say most of my favorite PJ lyrics are in Binaural though.

There hasn't been a band that has dropped so far off my musical radar as Pearl Jam has. From once being my all time favorite band over 10 years ago, to not having listened to them for the past 5 years... Can't even find the "Ten" album I used to have.

And I just heard their new single "Unemployable". It sucks. They didn't suck after Ten though it was their most superb album, but it's been very hit and miss afterwards.

IMO not as great as Ten, but I'm liking the new album, for me it's back to the PJ i know and love, to what made ten great, but they've taken the best parts of what they've done since and adding it into the mix.
I feeling it'll grow on me more aswell, give it a month or so.

The only reason I have it above Ten, is because I don't really like Ten all that much. I like the singles, Black, Why Go and Porch, but then the rest is filler in my eyes. Vs has no filler and the new album has very little.

Indie-rock encompases a lot of different sounds in rock and there is some influence there. After all grunge was underground before it became popular.

Although even indie-rock is a wide genre in itself, by modern definition, the new Pearl Jam album is pretty distant from it.

Has anybody seen them on the current tour? I'm going to see them at the gorge next month.

Heh, yeah I thought as much. I thought it was quite likely PJ and Audioslave would do something though, with a new Audioslave record out soon.

I havn't seen them yet, I'm going to in august.

It would be odd to have Green River and Mudhoney, and Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone. For obvious reasons.

I only heard some Mother Love Bone like 2-3 weeks ago, it was really good stuff.

whats with Pearl Jam now. all this years trying not to make a proper music videos and hating MTV. and now their doing Music videos again and not to mention, appearing on VH1.

are they trying to put back their name on mainstream again?

I don't see anything wrong with that. If I made something like a new album, I'd want it everywhere.

it got to the point where by trying to not sell out and compromise their music they were in fact compromising their sound by deliberately leaving out songs that sounded too mainstram, and therefore became hypocrites. They've lightened up and decided to stop hating the world, and they've produced their best album in a decade, so who's complaining.

besides, if they continue that kind of attitude they will loose their name in existence 5 to 10 years from now...

bumpage for easily the best band at reading
Eddie sounded great, they played sooo many amazing tunes, and they blew their performance at Astoria away
plus that performance of iron man was just incredible :p

Kyle

Haha, that was some hardcore ukelele action. Was an amazing set, I was particuarly happy with the inclusions of Dissident and Soon Forget.

What really struck me was how Eddie Vedder came off on stage. I hear a lot of stuff being said about him, but he came accross completely humble, and genuinely affected by the audience's reception. It was a magnificent thing to see, and his voice has held up so well, unlike many of the other bands from the grunge era.

If there were any slight nitpicks, I would say that Mike's Even Flow solo was pretty poor, and I would have like to have seen Small Town included as it's a personal favorite. But anyway, it was still amazing.

PAJJ
08-28-2006, 09:50 AM
yeah eddie seemed really cool on stage, he really seemed to enjoy it aswell.
small town would've been cool, i'd like to of seen nothing as it seems for the same reason, but it was so good i'm not even going to complain, my neck and throat are still hurting like a bitch, it's ****ing awesome.

they'd kind of slipped out my music rotation recentley, and the gig at reading has just shoved them right back in there, they're even challenging the new maiden album, and i'm a maiden head

Yeah, seeing them live kinda reminded me that I have 5 Pearl Jam albums, I guess I'm a bigger fan than I thought I was. I always considered myself a casual fan, but I was singing away to all the words!

Tomorrows mission is to start learning some PJ songs on guitar.

PAJJ

you also have the most posts in the pearl jam thread :-/

yeah i was going to attempt to learn something, finding it hard to pick a song though, i know i'll get distracted so i'll only manage 1.

i need lost dogs then i'm complete studio wise, I'll pick it up tomorrow or Thursday depending on what's going on, and if i can find it.

i got well far learning a pearl jam song today, i got the main riff of alive down, then my effects pedal broke,
it's one thing after another ps2 (couldn't watch DVDs), the TV, then stereo, now this.

With Binaural, you ain't missing much.

First Three songs are good, the rest is pretty lackluster.

Kyle

What? Isn't Evacuation in the first 3 tracks? That track is worse than Bugs!

Speaking of which, what do y'all make of Bugs?

09-07-2006, 04:27 PM
Eddies accordian is ace

PAJJ
09-07-2006, 04:50 PM
bugs is mildly amusing on the first listen after that, (or even half way through) it's just terrible, and just horribly annoying, far worse then evacuation :-/

and that idea of binaural only being good for the first 3 tracks is crazy, first there's evacuation (track 3), which might be good if it wasn't for that horrible chorus...
but nothing as it seems, insignificance, grievance, thin air, are all further through the album and are all good tracks. i think there might be a couple more but off the top of my head i can't think of them.
It's not their best album, but if you can find it cheap it's worth a listen.

Kyle
09-07-2006, 07:26 PM
Definately, it was actually the first Pearl Jam album I ever owned, so I'll always have a special place for it. Nothing As It Seems and Soon forget are amazing.

State of Love and Trust was on 'The Singles' soundtrack, I'm not sure if it ever appeard on any proper lease except the Greatest Hits. It's an amazing song though, one of my favorites.

I only ever enjoyed Vs. fully by this group. Ten was okay with some great songs, after that they seemed to get really boring to me though in fairness i never listened to a great deal of material.

I recently learnt to play most of Animal on a sleepless night not so long ago. Was fun.

And by seeing that JXD was here, I'll guess that link is Pearl Jam covering Baba O'Riley.

yeah gotta love those two:thumb: . but i kinda screwed rats when we played it, but luckily i got my basslines back on track on the near end of the first verse. i didnt know they were gonna play rats till the moment i got on stage. the audiences's response to RVM was great though, they were singing along.
