Hey, she could choose worse inspirations.....atleast I won't have to listen to double bass until I want to throw my guitar through the kick drum.

Anyway, what's Meg White use? I'm not so much interested in brand, but more the type and sizes of everything.

Also, a friend of mine suggested going with Taye RockPro....any thoughts? I don't mind going cheap on the cymbals just to get her started, but I don't want to have to replace the drums later.

Well what Meg uses can be found very fast and easy with Google.

Surprised..? No.

As to the rest, hey there's a lot worse people to model playing after. When it's all said and done Meg get's the job done with no frills, double bass or even a closed roll to speak of. There's something to be said for someone who can use the most simple approach and still radio played songs.

Hey, I hear a lot of pop songs with double-bass.

But, yeah, you've got to appreciate simplicity (in that regard, playing to hymns is fun).

I tried that.....found lots of pics, but the only detail I came up with is that she uses a Clavia Ddrum trigger on her snare.

Who cares if shes not techical nor is Phil Rudd from ACDC but in a thread a few months back everyone was talking about how great he is and he just doesnt show it.

How do you know Meg White isnt the same?

So....I found out she uses Pearl, and this is what I've seen in the various pics;

Bass
Snare
Floor Tom
Rack Tom
Crash
Ride
Hi-Hat

Am I missing anything? Does anyone know what sizes she uses?

As far as her skill....I agree with most of the above. Meg's playing serves the music.....I've played with alot of musicans with alot of skill who can't.

Not sure about the size of the drums. Looks like 16x16 floor tom, 22x16 (maybe 14) bass. Not sure about the rack tom. But she plays Paiste cymbals.
14" Sig. Medium Hi Hat
19" Sig. Power Crash
22" 2002 Ride

Ludvig drums.
I'm guessing the sizes here and she probably change sizes from time to time. But with these sizes you can get the "Meg" sound.

kick 20-22 x 14-16
snare 14 x 5-6
tom 12-13 x 8-10
floor 14-16 x 14-16

Phil Rudd plays drums for the song "The Trooper" on an Iron Maiden tribute album...

I'd say it's safe to assume the guy's got some hidden skills.

You might all be right, she seems to have a different kit in every picture. I saw one with a Ludwig logo on the kick so she might be using a new style Ludwig kit.

ive seen the ac/dc drummer on an old ac/dc concert video and he does a drum solo...it's pretty sweet but i doubt he is one of the best. he too serves his purpose with ac/dc he just keeps it simple and gives angus a beat.

meg white.................wow i normally dont think the drummers in bands suck, even if i dont like the music. But good gosh Meg White is not good. If youve seen the white stripes play on David Letterman about 3-4 months ago. she was horrible, bad technique, looked terrible. but anyways. when i saw her on letterman her drum sizes looked like she had the standard, traditional drumset sizes.

Um did you read my post or not? It's obvious she's not skilled, but it's on purpose. They want her to play like a 5 year old because it works in their songs and it's the style they go for, and it's good. I'm not slamming Meg White at all, I like her playing and I like the band.

Meg White would be an excellent beginner role modle. it would start you off working on your timing. better that Neil peart and trying to immitate that stuff. it will just throw you off lol. As for what she uses I dont really know. but try google

As far as Meg White goes here's something for yall

Meg has never taken a lesson, isn’t particularly obsessed with gear (she plays Pearl), and says her pre-show warm-up consists of “whiskey and Red Bull.” Not surprisingly, her hero is another female primitivist: Moe Tucker of the Velvet Underground.

“I appreciate other kinds of drummers who play differently, but it’s not my style or what works for this band,” she says. “I get [criticism] sometimes, and I go through periods where it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that this is what is really needed for this band. And I just try to have as much fun with it as possible.”

She's (my gf) not really a beginner per say. She's never played on a kit before, but as a tenor drummer her Pipe band won the North American Highland Games championship, and came in 4th (overall, 1st in drumming) at the Worlds in Glasgow.....and has played bass and snare with different bands over time.

It's going to be funny watching her learn to move her arms and legs independantly though.....:amaze:

i dont feel like quoting all the specific ones that imma comment on, but...

sheila e is great

she uses that trigger on the bottom of her floor tom, not her snare (read and saw it in an article poking fun of her for using syth drums on the easiest stuff eevr)

that interview about him saying he doesnt want her to progress is correct (i saw the interview on public access)... also, he tyaught her how to drum (if i was her i wouldnt care what he wanted, and id progress on my own... even if i dont use it in songs)

and yes ludwig, but i dont know what sizes...

and she uses paiste cymbals
SIZES (as taken from www.paiste.com):

frankly it doesnt matter about how bad her tom angles are, she uses her toms as much as she does double bass, and shes more successful drummer than anyone on this forum will ever be, and probably understands music better than any of you will too.(im not a girl drummer, but i defend drummers, who are there to do their job, keep a pulse, and add a little extra something)

Anyways you said you didn't want to have to replace the drums, so I'd go with something of decent quality. Avoid low end Pearl (Target, Forum and Export) and Yamaha (Rydeen) stuff. I'd maybe go with a Mapex Pro M or a Sonor 3005, maybe even a Pearl Session. As for cymbals, that depends on how much you're willing to spend, and whether you wanna upgrade later.

thats cuz she has high quality mics and hits can hit it with power cuz she doesnt ever do anything even semi fast like doubles or anything...

like that guy was saying, she doesnt use her toms hardly at all... in fact the only time ive seen her use em is for seven nation army... i think the others are for looks... and she prolly just got the most expensive stuff she could with her knowledge of what actually sounds good... and prolly for the first brand that jumped at her to get her to endorse their products (im sure every band was fighting over her :sarcastic:)

Yes, but this argument has already been had once or twice in this thread. Meg is extremely simple, because it's what fits the White Stripes' music, bare bones bluesy rock and roll. Can you imagine a chopfest behind Jack Whites' simplistic riffs??? Probably not, it would take away from the song.

Ah. Then you might know who Colin Clansey is....he used to play with SFU? I'm the DM for the P&D of the Princess of Wales Own Regiment. I used to play side, but a few years ago I broke my wrist badly and've never been able to double the same since.....so my rolls and parididdles tend to sound lopsided. The old bass drummer quit around the time my cast came off, so I switched to bass, and then more recently to DM.

Why? I really don't want to have to buy her another kit once she's good enough to realizes how crappy the student model is, and I'm figuring that it'll be cheaper to upgrade the cymbals that it will to upgrade the drums. I'm open to your idea, just wondering the reasoning behind it.

oh... and ... why doesnt she buy her own kit

after a while of your gf playing, turn her on to sleater-kinney's drummer, janet weiss. the girl is badass.

as for meg white.. good to see some respect for her in this thread, as opposed to the usual bashing.. sure, she's not the best drummer, technically (ok, well she kinda sucks heh), but it goes perfect with their music and what they're trying to do. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it works for what it is.

Ah, wicked...yeah Colin has judged me a few times. What grade does your band play, as well as yoru girlfriend's?

The GF's was grade 4....but there was a big shake up a few years ago when the PM changed and it hasn't been the same. Mine doesn't compete.....we just play for the fun of it. Anyone who wants to compete in my town goes to either Glengary (Colin's band, Gr2) or Rob Roy (Gr3). Rob Roy's way to political for me and Glengary was costing me too much in gas, so I'm quite happy playing with the current group (5 minute drive and a strict PM who doesn't tollerate politics).
