I am recording a song (death/trash metal, but it also has clean parts in the middle) and I am looking for advice for getting a better bass tone. Also, I don't want to use distortion.

I have my bass going straight into my Boss GT-6 Guitar FX Processor, then into a mixer, and into Adobe Audition. Of course, I could bypass the GT-6 and I also have a couple of dynamic microphones and one condenser microphone so mic'ing my halfstack is also an option, although it's a guitar amp, not a bass amp. My bass is not the best (Squier Precision bass), but I'm sure there must be a way to get a really good sound with all this equipment.

I know about using compression and all that, but it's still not satisfactory to me (plus I'm not sure how compression works so I'm just pressing buttons randomly).

I would just go direct. when you aren't using the effects, just go direct and take that extra thing out of the chain.

Yeah I'm a guitarist, not a bassist. I mostly just have the bass for recording. Doesn't matter anyway because I will probably just plug in direct.
