so yeah, bought a bass back in late june of '05 and i havent changed the strings on it yet. I know I'v waited way to long to restring it but strings are $45! Any way a got some questions about strings.
How long should i wait to restring my bass (i know less then 6 mounths)
Whats a common string gaudge for rock/metal
Whats a good brand for rock/metal, Ernie Ball?

I didn't change my strings on my first bass ever! And the current set on my Fender has been sitting on there for over 2 years. $80 for a set of strings is expensive dammit!
I feel you should change your strings when you want to. I know Flea changes them before every gig, and if he isn't gigging, maximum every 3 weeks, and some musicians leave them on for as long as they can. It depends whether you like the "warmer" sound of old strings or the "twangy" sound of new strings how often you should change them. It's entirely up to you.
And I use DR.

I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky 45-100 sets on my basses. They're a great all around string for many different styles of music.

I usually restring every 6-14 months.
Ernie Ball Regular Round Wounds for me. Nice strings and their quite cheap.
And I think just a medium gage should work fine. I assume at least.

I'm never going to restring my bass, only if a string breaks/becomes seriously damaged. Other than that I'll just clean them in alcohol.

Do you use Elixers? I love how those strings feel, but anyways, for me, I leave them as long as I can until they get REALLY grimy, gross and much less responsive, like they're not able to keep their sustain anymore...o_O I used Elixers until a few days ago because I can't afford them anymore, but yeah don't put string cleaner on those...learned the hard way :( 6-10 months is usually the avg. for me though.

I love my RS665LD Rotosound set on my 5er, though the B isn't tight enough for the 34" scale. Rotosounds ftw

I got a pack of Ernie Balls for like 22 bucks. They were originally like 45 bucks, so I guess I was lucky when I got them.

$45? They're ripping you off. I get my Rotosound 66s for $20 a pack.
Christophicus- Most of them, yes. Some flats, however, like Rotosound 77s or TI Jazz Flats, are very bright.

You should, yes. Though they may need some breaking-in before they get to the sound you want.

Yeha but if you are getting them into the EU the postage and packaging is expensive aswell as some kind of import duty that you have to pay.

Flats would be good, i was looking for the sound i think your looking for. and at first i loved the flats, but then i tried fenders tapewound and its beautiful. they have a bit more tone, yet are very warm sounding, with verry little twang.
