I've always thought as "drummers" in the DrumSet sense to be a sub-group under the larger name 'Percussionist'.
Even a pianist is a percussionist, as the instrument of piano is a percussion instrument.

it's like squares and rectangles, a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not necessarily a square? well a drummer is a percussionist, but a percussionist isn't necessarily a drummer.

When someone refers to a "percussionist," 9 times out of 10, it's a conguero.

i wouldn't call a percussionist the guys who sit behind the concert band playing percussion. Most of the guys I've dealt with are 'drummers.'
I've always defined a percussionist as a drummer with musical aptitude. A drummer who can site-read music well and can read musical notation (as in keyboard parts) is a percussionist.
I've seen some damn good players on the set, but I wouldn't call them percussionists because they couldn't play melodic instruments or read music very well.

Well something like that. In our society we don't get to make up our own meanings... so whatever dictionary.com says a percussionist is.... that's what a percussionist is.
Being a drummer, I am inside the group of percussionist. Though I'd hold most percussionist are above me both in complexity of their instruments and theory.

well lets throw out all dictionarys and everyone can come up with their own meanings for every word, that makes more sense then to have 1 general definition people can agree on

Even a pianist is a percussionist, as the instrument of piano is a percussion instrument.
I think its funny how some pianists deny that, because of percussionists reputation. But all your doing on piano is banging on things, which is percussion.
