if you have a song in the key of Em or Gmaj and you wanted to make a solo in that key would you use G ionian and A dorian and so on or E ionian and Fdorian and so on like that

G ionian etc. Remember that the ionian scale is a major scale, and in the key you mentioned, E is a minor chord, so E ionian (major scale) over E minor wouldn't work. :thumb:
However, it's kind of pointless to go "OK, when he plays Gmaj, I'll play G ionian, and then when he plays Dmaj I'll play D mixolydian," etc because all those modes would be the same notes. So just keep playing the same scale (G ionian), just emphasise different notes.

An easy way to work out keys, with out remembering keys is to play the Pentatonics of the chords in the song,
if a song has the chords, G, Am and D which is in the Key of Em or Gmaj, you can play the G Major Pentatonic, A Minor Pentatonic and the D Major Pentatonic.
Pentatonics avoid the conflicting notes of the Modes so this always works.
and if you play the patterns that are two frets apart you have all the notes in the scale, in this case the A Minor Pentatonic and the D Major Pentatonic are two frets apart, the D Major Pentatonic is also the B Minor Pentatonic.
