Is there any advantages to sitting up this high? He's almost standing straight up... It's Marcus Baylor by the way.

not having full leg power, smaller point of balance.
ever tried standing up and playing 2 part coordination? let alone 4 part?
not counting the gear issues, and the stability of all his equipment.

Yeah, and look how high his toms are off his bass. Half my equipment doesn't even go that high.

Mangini also sits very high (don't know if this high though).
advantage: you can play faster, because you have your balance point at your buttock (not your feet anymore), so you can use more and (more freely) ankle motion.

I get back pains when I sit high. But it does give me some more speed.
But I sit pretty low nowadays cause control > speed, offcoarse ;)

Actually, Baylor normally sits as low as the stool goes. He has a special spring loaded stool. Each time you press down on the stool twice it raises itself by one notch and pressing once it goes down by one notch. The spring had gone wrong during that concert and almost ejected him into the audience during his drum solo, hence he had to play the rest of the gig at maximum height. That's as much as I know at the moment.

Thats freakin' high
I sit really low, mainly as my drum stool is a crap one and wont go any higher :(

i try to keep the top of my throne slightly lower thanmy snare. It helps alot with double bass. you don't have to put forth as much effort. You can also get over top of your toms. this means you can put more cymbals on too. I like my throne high, but i would like it igher thaan i have it, but i can't.

Oh my... yes, one would hope so. Only slightly lower? I guess you don't have legs or play rim shots. Let not forget, all things in drumming should be messured by their contribution to playing double bass.

yeah, agreed. Whats the point in having the snare like that? And...Ive found I can play double bass better with the snare higher, it doesnt get in the way of my legs as much.

The top rim of my snare drum comes up to about my belly button. I sit a little higher than 90 degree angles with my legs.

If your throne was shot up that high, and you weren't used to it, wouldn't you want to move your gear higher? It wouldn't of taken that long to get it playable.

so his cymbal and drum stands also rise up higher automatically if you hit them on the wing nut or sth?

That would make it really hard to play the double bass wouldnt it? I guess everyone has his preferences.

no... if he nearly got ejected. Then obviously he adapted... that shot probably wasn't right after he got ejected.
Obviously, he stopped playing or waited for the song to be over and then adjusted everything.

If he had time to adjust his WHOLE set why couldnt he adjust his throne instead or use something else?

i find i get less speed when i sit high because your legs are supporting your feet instead of the chair, therefore it is harder to lift them, when they aren't supporting any weight they are free to do whatever they want.
plus, control = speed.
