View Full Version : How many of you mix cymbal brands?

How many of you PURPOSEFULLY mix cymbal brands? Like, if you normally use Zildjian but they didn't have the sound you wanted for your hats, so you got some Sabians or something?
I'm hestitant to because I don't know how everything will match together. I am looking into some Sabian HH regular hats, and a few Ziljian K Custom rides. Is it a bad idea? Zildjian doesn't really have any hats that I am terribly impressed with, but I love the sound of the HH hats. BUT, Zildjian makes the 22" High Definition ride and the Left-Side ride that I love the sounds of, and Sabian doesn't really make anything like them. What are your guys' thoughts?
I'll be honest, I've never cymbal-shopped before... the only cymbals I've ever owned are the B8's that I bought when I first started drumming about 4 years ago.

As long as you like the sound. Mix away!

i try to keep my crashes within similar ranges, but the rest i have no problem mix it up.
many people on here have multiple series and multiple companies of cymbals.
i have all sabians now but I used to have sabian, zildjian and paiste all on the same kit.

well, in the case of Zildjian A and Sabian AA, they're practically the same cymbal.
Except for having two wuhans, I only have one of each brand. Zildjian New Beat Hi-Hats, Sabian AA Crash, Istanbul Trad Crash, Wuhan Ride, Wuhan Splash. It fits really well methinks.

I have Sabian, Zildjian and Wuhan.
Actually most of it's Wuhan come to think of it, 2 chinas, 1 splash and 2 crashes heh. My first set was Sabian B8's though.

I use em all, I think it's pretty dumb to stick to one brand for anything.
It comes to one thing.. If it sounds good USE it!

^^ Unless you find everything you like from one company. I use all Zildjians although I've tested some Sabians along the way to see what they had to offer.

10" Stagg SH Splash
17" Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash
21" Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry Ride

I mix fairly equally between Sabian and Zildjan. I have Sabian Crashes/Splashes, but I prefer Zildjan Rides/Hats.

I use just Sabians but I've played with all brands outside of my kit and i have to say that i prefer just one company. Also i think that it looks better with all one brand.

yeah, its called not being a cymbal whore lol, they sound find if you like the sound of each one you buy ,it shouldnt matter what brand they are. But im not sure how it would sound if say an HHX and An Avedis were hit the same time, good or bad?

I have all sabians except for my ride. I also plan on getting a wuhan china. When I buy new cymbals, I look at sabian first because they are cheaper for me and if they dont have the sound I want then I look to other brands.
Plan B.

I've always wanted a line that gives me EVERYTHING I need, but that's impossible, so I have like a bunch from everyone.

I really don't like to mix. Yeah it's true if it sounds good to do it... and that makes sense. But I wouldn't... Find a better company with more variety... Meinl's cymbal line has a wide variety of things.

people that are branded like that make me angry. it is terrible if you are blinded by the logo on something. sadly though alot of people seem to be into playing for the image and to be cool.
if you think the cymbal sound is good then use it. there is no reason to limit yourself to one brand... unless you are endorsed and your endorser requires that you play only their stuff.

I've got something from each of the big three.
Sabian ride and china, Zildjian crash and splash, and Paiste hats.
Although I admit I've been getting into Sabian alot lately. I've been trying out Zildijan crashes, and most of them don't compare to some of the Sabians I've tried.

Some people can get what they need from one brand, hard to belive I know, but true. Not trying different brands is bad but once you narrow down what you want it doesnt matter if you have to use three brands or one as long as you have given yourself all the options.

i have Paiste hi-hats and one crash (sheet cymbals, came in a pack), but i also have a Zildjian A Custom 17 Fast Crash and a Sabian AA Medium Ride. im gonna keep all crashes Zildjian (once i replace the Paiste). its all opinion, i would just make sure that you can hear all the cymbals (dont have everything a RUDE and then a K ride). but hey, its up to you

I mix everything. Certain companies have given me the sounds I wanted so I bought that cymbal.
I have a:
Sabian Vault crash
Paiste 2oo2 crash
Zildjian oriental china trash
Paiste sig dry ride
Zildjian K splash
Zidjian A mastersounds
Then three Vintage zildjian Ks that I use quite often.
Normally not everything is set-up so I vary through the cymbals trying out different combos.

im not a huge fan of mixing crashes, but rides and hat mixes seem to be okay. If I were you Tillmon, I would get the HH reg. hats, I own them and they are truly excellent!

Mixing brands is cool. Last time I checked cymbals were made to be played and heard, not framed and hung on the wall to be looked at.
I think every drummer wishes there was one easy answer for the sound you want-one line that would ultimately fulfill your needs. That never happens though, especially if you play different styles of music.
The only people who shouldn't mix brands are those who get endorsements, but otherwise you're limiting your choices for no good reason.
Personally I think the logos on cymbals are obnoxious. I've been thinking about removing them all with some nail polish remover. That's one way to have them all match. It's all bronze.

I agree with that to some extent. I like to keep my heads the same brand, it just looks better IMO.
I had an Aquarian on my snare as the batter and I bought some batters for my toms which were Remo Pinstripes.
I had to buy an amb for the snare, I dont know why.

No, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Why do most pros play with mixed cymbals in the studio? Because they sound good. They play with the same brand cymbals live because they're endorsed; they're legally required to by the conditions of their endorsement. You should stop paying attention to what Travis Barker tells you and do what actually works for you.

I mix and match.. whatever I want until I'm paid to do otherwise. Even still...
Most the logos are removed off the bottom of my cymbals. So unless you catch the glimpse or get behind me somehow, you can't tell what I'm playing from the front.
Wow, some of you get right bent out of shape over people not mixing things up.

...anyones choice in any cymbal should be determined by:
- the size of the cymbal
- the thickness of it
- the shape of it
- what it is made of
- how it has been tempered
...Hence THE SOUND OF IT, NOT the ****IN LOGOS PRINTED ON IT!

30 years ago I used to mix Zildjians and Paiste, but eventually switched over to all UFIPs. Now, I use Istanbul Agops, but mix the lines. I like to keep the Turkish trashiness of Istanbul Sultans or Traditionals, but like the bright cutting sound of the Alchemy line up. Depending on the gig, depends on how I mix and match.

Zildjian and sabian both share the same heritige and mix very well... I think miking symbols brands is fine unless you mix a dark cymbol such as stagg with somthing like zildjian A customs

I will eventually branch out and have cymbals from a fair few companies. You've just got to make sure when you try out the cymbals you try them with others they are going to be on the kit with. That way you'll know if they fit in well with each other.

mixing dark and bright cymbals is great. it gives you a much more versitile range of sounds. i dont have much experience with staggs, but i know that a vault crash would mix perfectly with something like a paiste sig. 18" fast crash, and probably something darker than that too.
and by the way, you spelled CYMBAL two different ways and both were wrong.

Ever heard of endorsements?
As far as making you look more professional, your average punter doesn't give a crap what make the cymbals on the drummers kit are, so it doesn't matter, and your average drummer should know that it's all about the sound, and specific brands shouldn't matter, so it doesn't matter.
Therefore, it doesn't matter.
