practice legato slowly... start off with 1 2 and 4 fingers then mroe advanced ones.. 1 3 4 is the hardest to get independant...

but use a metranome definitly start slow, with chromatics in all unorthadox ways aswell as legato, incl string skipping legatto...

learning joe satriani songs done wonders for my playing, legatto and independant fingers

by independant does it mean only one finger on the fretboard for each note, as opposed to keeping a finger(normally index) 'behind' the other fingers kinda thing

It means being able to move and control your fingers individuallt, rather than affecting any other fingers when they move.

Make sure that your fingers are spread out one per each fret and that they stay close to the fretboard at all times. In other words, if you are playing with your middle finger do not let the index finger (or the other fingers) flinch up and move away from the neck. You have to practice extremely slowly to make sure that this is happening. Also do not let any extra tension creep into your shoulder and the rest of your body.

There should be no pain whatsoever when you practice, if you feel pain STOP! This is a body's way of telling you that you are doing something wrong!

Good Luck, hope this helps.

Mike.
