I am looking into getting new cymbals, and here's what I want (all Sabian):

14" HH Dark Hats
21" HHX Dry Ride
20" HH Dark Crash

Just those three (or four I guess) will run up about $800 bucks. :( And on top of that I'm looking into getting a new kit, but I'm still figuring out which one I want.

In this thread, discuss how I'm going to need to work for a year before I have enough money for all of this because of car payments and such. It's actually only probably 2 or 3 nths of work but still... dang.

Also, discuss those three cymbals if you own any of them and what you think about them. Also, discuss what you think about Premier kits if you have one.

Also, discuss what's on your to-buy list when you have the money for it.

On my to buy list is a Mapex Pro M Maple 5 Piece rock kit. The price keeps dropping on musician's friend. I freakin want that kit! And yes, cymbals do cost a buttload. I've tried the hats in GC and they seemed like they were alright. Didn't much care for the ride though. (granted I am very picky)

yeah the dry ride is an acquired taste I think, I'm really into Jack Dejohnette and his rides are the driest you'll ever hear, so I like that sound a lot.

Be thankful you don't play a string instrument, they cost more than any drum kit.

I wish ride cymbals weren't so expensive. They're my favorite kind, but generally they are the most expensive.

Not necessarily. The higher-end guitars and basses usually cost the same as a mid-quality drum set from what I can tell. Plus you can get a good reliable guitar for less than an entry-level drum set most of the time from what I can see. Plus drumsticks can add up if you break a lot. Picks are practically a dime a dozen. And you have to replace heads, which cost quite a bit more than strings, especially if you have to replace them all at once. And cool cymbals, of course, are expensive as hell :p

Actually my friend works at a music store and can get the cymbals for a ridiculous price, right now I'm looking at 20" HH Raw Dry Ride, 20" HH Dark Crash, and HH Regular Hats, he can get them for me for under $600. I will probably change what I want again though, it's hard to decide.

I recently bought a Zildjian K Custom 20" Dry Ride and I love it. Yes, its very dry but its still extremely versatile. Also to note, the bell on it is amazing. Its ear piercing.

After tax, the price comes to $280.00 but im sure you can get them lower than that. I got it for $235 at guitar center after talking with one of the salesmen.

K Dark Rides are pricey but not insane. Something like 599 NZ for it at the NZ Rockshop

Cymbals and gear in general is cheaper in america than anywhere else, so you have that advantage for starters. Also, once you own a cymbal or pair of hihats they will or should last for years so your investment is pretty small compared to the amount of years of use you can get from them. There are thousands of drummers in the same boat, all wanting top end gear they can't afford. Much the same as thousands of people who want a ferrari but make do with a standard car which does the same job. Only slower :D
It's one reason why endorsements are so attractive. Also, when you do finally get the cymbals you want, you will appreciate them so much more then if they were cheap to buy. And you will get them at some point, it's just a matter of time. So worry not.

Yeah, quit bitching, lol jk. My list is a: 15" and 17" K custom dark thin crashes, a 20" K custom dry light ride and an 8" k zildjian thin splash. that will cost heaps, including stands.

True actually. A beginner double bass costs around 5 times more than a beginner drum set. A professional double bass can go up to hundreds of thousands of pounds :)

Yes. Unless of course you choose very thin cymbals and you're playing in a very hard hitting band, then probably no amount of good technique is gonna save them beyond a certain amount of time.

I think he made the same mistake as me in thinking string instruments meant guitars/basses. I've almost forgotten about all instruments except guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard

I have mixed feelings about this.

Cymbals can cost you alot (like the £300 i paied for HH bright hats), but if you shop around you can pick up some bargins (like i paied £160 for some UFIP Class hats today).

Be thankful you don't play a string instrument, they cost more than any drum kit.

What are you talking about?

A decent drum kit will cost way more than a decent bass or guitar in MOST cases.

I think you missed the other replies. String instrument doesn't only refer to rockband type stuff like electric guitars or basses. Try violins, cellos, double basses, violas ect...

Or a harp!

Yeah but the first thing you think of is guitar and bass, plus I know about them where as I dont with any other instrument lol.

I have never yet had to replace a cymbal due to wear. Usually my preference of sound changes long before the cymbal wears... I do like to buy real hand hammered and hand made cymbals, though...
Couple of great places to check out for on line US cymbal stores are:
http://www.superstitionpercussion.com
http://www.thecymbalshop.com
Both these companies provide great pricing and service for Istanbul and Alchemy cymbals. In Canada: http://www.heartbeatpercussion.com

when I think of stringed instruments, guitars and basses don't even enter my mind. I think of orchestral instruments, like contra bass, cello, violin, etc.
