The Band:
Jason Peppiatt - Vocals
Cameron Grant - Bass
Joe Haley - Guitars
Dave Haley - Drums
Matthew Chalk - Vocals (1999-2004)
Bio:
For the past 5 or so years, Psycroptic have been at the forefront of the Australian Extreme Metal scene, with their Technical Death Metal sound. The band formed in the southern most state of Australia, Tasmania, some time in 1999 after each members previous bands disbanded. By October 2000, Psycroptic had made enough money from live shows and were ready to head into the studio to record what would be their debut album, The Isle Of Disenchantment. It was entirely self funded, and was released independantly in the January of 2001. Extensive touring followed, with the highlight being the headling of Australia's premier Metal festival, Metal For The Brain.
2002 had Psycroptic preparing material for a follow up to The Isle Of Disenchantment, and although they continued to tour for the first half of the year, they refused to play any new material until it had been recorded. September saw the four re-enter the studios, with The Scepter Of The Ancients finally being finished in January 2003. It then wasn't released until the 12th of August, but it was well worth the wait. Aside from the production values being better (as expected), the band had gelled together to produce a near perfect album. Matthew Chalks vocals vary nicely, ranging from high pitched screams and shrieks, to the deepest of growls. Dave Haley is the standout though, with his pounding drums blending perfectly with the rest of the band. He's no Flo Mournier, but he still does a hell of a job. To be honest, in each reveiw I've read of this album, the writer has stated they prefer a different aspect of the music, so there should be something for everybody.
Anyway, it was the release of The Scepter Of The Ancients that really established Psycroptic's name, also getting them signed to the US based label, Unique Leader. This was great, until they were ready to tour Europe with Dismember, when Vocalist Matthew Chalk decided not to participate. Short notice left the rest of the band looking for a quick replacement, when Jason Peppiatt stepped up and proved his worth. Upon their return to Australia, 'Chalky' returned to his position on vocals, before tensions between the band prompted him being asked to leave (March 2005). Jason Peppiatt then took his place as the permanent vocals for Psycroptic, and was applauded by enthusiastic crowds on his second tour with the band. The remainder of the year was spent recording the follow up to "Scepter", and accompanying Nile on their last show in Aus.
Shortly after that, the opened for Behemoth on their Australia tour, promoting their name before the release of their latest album, Symbols Of Failure. I'm yet to hear it in it's entirity, but it sounds pretty good. I don't think I like Jason's vocals as much though. I'll have to listen to it properly before I make a final decision on that though. Psycroptic are currently on another Australian tour, and will be heading to Europe in April/May, so try and get to one of their shows if you can.
I will be sending out The Scepter Of The Ancients with The Daily Upload shortly, but for the meantime they a couple of new tracks available on their myspace. If there's any fans around already, discuss Psycroptic and all their glory.

Good write up, I saw these guys in Melbourne with Behemoth, they were the best support band. The guitarist is cool to watch, he's a very good player.
I'm seeing them again this sunday which should be good, they are the main act this time. I really need to buy one of there albums.

I haven't seen them live yet, but I've only ever heard good things. I couldn't go to Behemoth, and I missed them on this tour because I'm broke. I'll be seeing them at a festival in a couple of weeks though. Should be good.
Also, you Australians can pencil in The Furor as supports for the Cryptopsy tour. Psycroptic will be in Europe, and with that takes out any chance of The Amenta supporting.

Is this confirmed?
Nope, purely an assumption. But, Psycroptic, The Amenta and The Furor were always going to be the big rumored 3, and with Psycroptic going to Europe, it takes two of those bands out of the running. Just a thought.

I HIGHLY recommend The Scepter Of The Ancients.
As do I. THe album is sheer brillance. In my opinion one of the greatest Death Metal albums ever. Its techniqual while catchy and exciting. I recommend it to anyone even if your not into extreme metal as it was one of the albums which made me love the genre.

I would put money on The Furor being supports... but I would rather see another band tbh. I like The Furor, but I don't really want to see them again just yet.

Seems like they might have been over-hyped the first time I heard of them.
Anyway, The Scepter Of The Ancients got sent out last night (Daily Upload). Hopefully some people enjoyed it. As for me, I slsk'd Symbols Of Failure last night. It's not bad at all, but I think I still prefer Chalky on vocals.

I loved The Scepter of The Ancients and I must agree with you with the vocals. I had heard the other one (Jason) on vocals before but I prefer "Chalky".

Eee go see them right away! They've had several shows in Australia, and lucky you, you live there.
And for the people who live in the States and maybe Canada, I saw a comment from George Kolias in the Psycroptic guestbook which said this:
June 28th 2006
09:14:40 AM
Name:
George Kollias
Do you have any comments?
Hey Poustis!!!
Greetings from Nile brothers, can wait to tour the States together and have some fun on the road, keep kicking *** in the name of the blast beat (the invented,created,perfected)....
Are you up for another beer???Ha ha ha..
Maybe I'm naive, but doesn't this sound like a Nile/Psycroptic tour in the future? Or maybe it's just an idiot pretending to be Kolias. Hmm, hard to tell. The thought of Nile and Psycroptic together makes me wanna scream =D. All in all, I'm just super anxious for them to get in Canada/States.
And I ordered SOTA and SOF over a month ago, but one of the CDs is out of stock. It's killing me.

I've seen them three times since I made that post.
They're never fail to disappoint live either. Joe Haley and Cameron Grant have windmilling down pat. \m/
Also, Psycroptic have toured with Nile twice before (I think). I know they just did a European tour with them a month or two ago, and I think Psycroptic opened on the Nile Australian tour. Let's hope, for your sake, they'll be touring North America together. :thumb:

I thought they were there just recently, but when I looked they only did one show in London. It's probably be quite a while before they are back there as well. :(
I just found out they scored the opening slot for Cannibal Corpse's Australian tour in October. It will be yet another show where I like the opener more than the headline, hehe.

I really enjoy SoF, but I'll agree that Scepter is better. Only by a very small margin though. I think SoF might have sounded a little better if the production wasn't so clear in places.

Vocals? Dude, Psycroptic are known for their awsome vocals. Either Matt or Jason, they both own. But oh well, to each their own.
And honestly, I can't choose between SoF and SotA because they are different in their own ways. I just love 'em both. <3.

i don't dislike the vocals at all, and i think the vox on SotA are damn good, but there are just some bits in that song (EpochOTGods) that sound like someone is just going arrowarorarowaroarrer and not actually singing. still mostly great and i never really let vocals affect my discision on whether or not i like a band.

Have any of you guys ever checked out the Psycroptic lads side projects? Such as Ruins. They're Dave Haley's Black Metal band, and they are awesome. I'd highly recommended checking them out.
I've also looked into Matthew Chalks band, MSI (Mutilated Spastic Iguanas), and man, he really should've stuck to vocals rather than drums. Such a waste. :upset:

He's been in a number of bands actually, playing either Drums or Bass. MSI and Space Raven are what he is currently in, playing drums, and I'm not sure if he is still playing bass in a band called Born Headless or not.
i may well check out Ruins.
I uploaded it for the Daily Upload, and it's in the September 12th edition if anyones interested. If you're not on the upload, post your email here and I'll fwd it to you.
