I'm sure this has been asked before, but I searched first and found very little tbh.

So what is everyone's preferred drum machine? It can be either a program or an actual machine.
I've never used an actual machine, but if it's worth it, I might get one sometime. For example, I've heard some great drum machines on albums. What exactly do they use in the studio? Probably nothing you can buy, huh? For instance, on the album "Hours" by David Bowie, I really like the sound of the drum machine--and it's obvious it's a machine, in a good way.

As far as programs go, I've tried Fruity Loops, Drumsite, and Hammerhead (I think that was the name?).
Drumsite is okay but you have to pay for it to do anything with it, really.

Fruity Loops is kind of a hassle but it's the best I've found so far. I'm wondering if there's better quality soundclips I can swap in, though.

Discuss!

I've heard about that but never tried it. Can you program your own beats or is it all presets, and is there a variety of drumkits (or can you swap in new ones)?

Yeh? Is it powerful?

im gonna tackle the threadstarter.

Hmm, I'll look around there, thanks. I've never seen drum machine threads there before though.

FL is a piece of piss to import your own samples. just drag and drop mp3 / wav soundclips onto the loop thing

^ Cool. Yeah I never actually tried it, I just wasn't sure if it was capable of it.

And by samples you mean, samples of each drum, right? Not pre-made beats or nothin'.

Do you guys think anything out there is better than FL (as far as programs and actual machines go)? Or do I have the best?

you can do premade beats straight onto the timeline, or onto the loop board, and get the tempo right

Not too sure what you mean by powerful, but I like it. It has 12 velocity sensitive pads. You can have it record you playing the pads and it will remember when you triggered the pads and at what dynamics. You can then go back and edit it if you need to. It can hold 50 user defined patterns (and 50 preset) from 1 to 128 beats long. You can then take the patterns and put them together into a song. It can remember 100 songs. You can choose sounds and make your own "sets." I like it but mainly use it as a metronome as of right now. My dad used to use it for recording.
