I'm pretty sure these guys would fall under the category of funk, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I was downloading some stuff by them last night, and really dug 'em. Papa Was A Rolling Stone is such an amazing catchy song.
So, discuss Sly & The Family Stone ITT.

Fun band. Sly at the Grammys was hilarious. When I'm that old I'm going to have an orange mohawk too.

My favorite funk band, awesome beyond all belief. Looking back, the Grammys appearance was pretty funny, but it was kind of an embarrassment.

I'm pretty sure "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is by The Temptations, unless Sly did a cover of it.
Anyway, I really like "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)," it's such a groovy song.:)

I believe Sly did do a cover. But yes, they are funky like noone's business.

If you want to hear something funky, I'd recommend "Sing a Simple Song," "Don't Call Me ******, Whitey" and "Sex Machine." Their Greatest Hits is probably the best place to start, but Stand! is my personal favorite.

There's A Riot Goin' On is my favorite Sly album, and when I'm going for some deep funk I always put on "Thank You For Talkin' To Me Africa."

I have, for the longest time, been dying to get into them. I've heard some individual songs that I really dug, but haven't gotten around to more than that.
Do they have any notable live stuff?

They play one song (an extended version of Higher) on the Woodstock DVD, other than that, I'm not sure.

I love that song. I tried to arrange it for big band one time, but that didn't go so well.

There is a ton of live Sly stuff available on both audio and video, you just have to know where to look

Ah yes, Sly, one of my favorite funk bands. I listened to their Greatest Hits record on the record player last night, it was pretty sweet.
