Gong bass drums.

Could someone explain a way for me to turn a bass drum into a gong bass? I felt like having a nice project to keep me occupied.

A gong bass is just a mounted(like a tom), bass drum with no reso head right? Or is there something more?

Theres something more. Its an 18/20" bass drum with a 20/22" head.

They have special lugs that points out from the drum, so you would have to get some of those.

Or you could put stuff between the drum and the lugs, like a 1" piece of wood.

You mean the DIY, jam a piece of wood in there suggestion. If so, yea I think it'll work. It won't be pretty though. And you'll need longer screws for the lugs.
Are you going to cut the drum in half? You can get two gong-drums.

You should check if you can buy the special lugs somewhere though.

With a normal head it would just be a giant tom. :naughty:

With a bigger head you'd have to account for the downward stretch of the skin when you positioned the lugs. They look pretty damn cool though!

I'd prefer it to be deep. Might leave the reso on and have a giant tom.
