Im friends with people that have been drumming (and playing guitar, bass and singing) for 3-4 years that cant play a simple song like smells like teen spirit, or (beleive it or not) any white stripes songs!!!.... now i kinda wanna tell them they dont got it musically.. or that they should get lessons or something... but do you know any ways to let them know without... making them get mad at you for telling them they blow *** at their instrument when theyve been working so hard for all those years on it...?

Maybe they haven't been working hard at all? Their instrument might not be as important to them as it is to you. I'm guessing drumming is your main hobby, while it may be just a time-filler for them; a second to one of their other hobbies.
Anyways, I'm hungry.

Why do you care what they do? If they want to be good, they will do what is necessary to become good. Nothing you say matters. Let them be and worry about yourself.

I was actually talking to my friend about this the other day... I think that you either have the drumming in you or you don't.

Yeah, I know a kid been playing 6 years thinks hes Bonhams reincarnation yet he can barely play a beat. I told him to groove and I counted off a slow tempo and he played a simple rock beat. 8ths on hat bass on 1 and 3 snare on 2 and 4(you know, Wock and Woll). I told him to groove, he did like two bass hits or something. So sad.

Constructive critism never hurt anyone, much. Your friends aren't in it for the instrument, they sound more akin to someone who does it to show off on myspace.

Thats a beat. I explained it better in person. This kid thinks hes good and he said things like its boring to play soft and its boring to play slow. So me and the other kid challanged him to play a groove, and he played a basic rock beat. I meant for him to play a groove like you'd hear in a funk song. I explained it good to him(in person) I forgot what I said but it didn't sound like a challenge. I think I said the word groove, and he just looked at me to see the tempo I was tapping my sticks at and was playing that beat. It was horrible no balance or nothing.

I don't think natural talent dictates who can drum and who can't. (nor am I implying you were saying this) Perseverence and disciplined study account for more than natural talent.
I think that for a lot of people music is just a pastime. They buy some instrument (usually a guitar, haha),& learn the bare minimum that it takes to play. I think naturally this is what everyone does until they're triggered by something that drives them to become an amazing performer. Even child prodigies almost always have a very supportive adult figure that drives them to achieve.

^well said jive and my thoughts exactly. You can be good and achieve a lot just through hard work. Although, to be like one of the greats (Rich, Weckl, Donati, etc....) natural talent does play a significant role.

They probably just don't care about drumming, they probably never practice. There's a kid like at my school.
!aaa!
02-28-2006, 01:30 PM
Natural talent becomes pretty meaningless if you've been drumming, and been passionate about it, for about 3 years. Someone with no coordination or musicality could play good if they wanted to put the time and effort in.

ummmm... he plays every day for a long *** time, and he always tells people hes really good, and he sucks x 10 squared... and he always says he learned a new song, and he shows me and its completely wrong (ex. smells like teen spirit... easy)... and i dont tell him its wrong cuz id feel like a jackass
and he always says hes better than people at their instrument (he plays guitar and tries to sing too) and he sucks worse at every instrument more than anyone ive ever heard in my life..... he also likes to think hes good at beatboxing and he does the same thingevery time and is horrible... and he compliments himself alot...

It's not the fact that you practice, it's what you practice that makes you good. They may say they "practice" but they may in fact just be playing and not working on anything substantial and that is why they are no good.

inflated egos are at the root of a lot more problems than just bands!
I mean....I don't want to get all political and crap, but it's a shame that more people don't care about how badly we're destroying our planet simply because it's "unmanly" to care about such things. or actually burden themselves with thought for just a second to try and figure out how to solve things without so quickly resorting to violence (which breeds more violence, of course, ad infinitum).

haha... my bros in a band with this terrible drummer (hes only been playin for a year and a half and doesnt think hes good) and they have a break down in the song where he plays this beat that sounds like some jungle boogie thing that would be in george of the jungle, and makes dumb faces and flails his arms everywhere when he plays, and luckily drums are loud, because i crack up every time that part comes around... but at least he doesnt compliment himself...
my bros actually offering to buy me a new snare of my choosing to be in his band... or a crash and splash of my choosing

I'm not good at any of my instruments. I don't practice rudimentary skills or much technicality.
But I have a damn good time playing music and jamming along with simple songs I really enjoy. That's what music is about to me anyways.

Thas exactly the same with me. I think. Well, I get told im good by my mates, but I suppose its because I hear alot of other people playing more technical stuff. The main problem with me is that when I 'practise', I just jam along to songs or do a few solos, without learning anything new. I am hopefully starting lessons soon though.

I think you guys have a good thing going. I know plenty of people who have been playing forever and still can't keep time without a drummer, and others who've played for 3 years and play amazing. Music is just one of those things where you either get it or you don't but no matter what (as long as they know and recognize that they suck) even people who play bad can still have fun doing it anyway.

Yeah its still a groove. It doesn't have to be 'funky' with lots of ghost notes and stuff to be a groove. A groove (for me) is basically a beat that feels good, you can tap your feet to/bob your head type of thing. If you can do that with a simple rock beat then thats great. Its all about emotion, not how much you play.

Agreed.
I think it was in a book called "how to practice jazz" by Jerry Coker, that the author talks about the difference between "practicing" and "reviewing".
Most people who practice and never get better aren't "practicing", they're "reveiwing"-playing crap they already know how to play. Everyone does this. It's gratifying to hear yourself bust out something that sounds good, but you don't ever get anywhere.
It's more difficult to crack open that book of super-hard impossible stuff and just start trying to get through it. THAT is how you improve.

I suck at guitar. I've got a great ear for melody (according to my guitarists) and I am usually excellent at coming up with vocals and/or guitar parts that complement other guitars... but I can't play the damn thing consistently.
It could be because I just don't play enough. I think it just doesn't come to me as easily.

this reminds me of a video i saw of Dream Theater playing Erotomania live.
At a certain part, Portnoy started playing quieter and quieter until the band couldn't hear him. The moment he wasn't audible by the band, they fell HORRIBLY out of time until Portnoy counted them back in...

ummm... he cant "bust out a something that sounds good" thats what im trying to say... his skill is like sitting on the drums for the first time and trying to "review" .... which would sound like a turd playing a garbage can

the worst thing, is when someone who sucks musically, and goes out and buys a bunch of wicked equipment. My buddy, started playing the drums over a year ago, and in his first two months he bought this AMAZING tama set for like 4K after he already had a decent pearl starter kit, then all these 300$ cymbols and DW double kick. And how he plays now, is about the same level i played the very first time i ever sat in front of the drums. It kills me. I tried playing with him one time with some friends, i had my guitar, and there was another guitar and a bass. all of the strings sounded great, but the drums, were basically random hits on the set and no particular time. *shudder*

Well yeah, but it was forced and clanky, again I meant something with some UMMF, but even that basic beat he did didn't flow, the hihats were clanky and it wasn't because they were ZBT's. He holds his sticks so tight. I swear that kid pisses me off. He thinks hes good, yesterday he was showing me his "heel toe" he was moving his whole knee then after a minute he was in pain that he had to go "aah" and he goes I could go fast like that I just need to develop my muscle.

... my friend was gonna go down to our local show place on open mic night, and beatbox, and he also thought that he was gonna sell his very poorly recorded cds of him beatboxing for 5 bucks a pop, and that he was gonna sell enough cymbals to "get better cymbals than you" (switch you with me)... and i got ... sabian aax stage crashs, hh ride, and meinly gen x filter china... and zxt rock hats (gay) but soon to be replaced with some aax stage hats :)...
and he sucks at beatboxing... everyone makes fun of him behind his back, and his bassist told him that he sucks, so he kicked him out....
and hell just tell people that theyre in his band, then bring it up later and say that we said we would when we never did, and sometimes he'll just tell other people that were in his band without talking to us first (he did that yesterday actually...)
