well basically, my fingerpicking is pretty neglected from not doing much with it and i'm trying to improve it a lot. i don't really know the proper technique; am i supposed to play a certain string with a certain finger or does it vary by song/what is most comfortable? and what are some exercises or licks or maybe even songs that i can learn to help my fingerpicking? i've been trying to learn road by nick drake and i've found myself having a bit of trouble even though the patterns don't seem to be TOO complicated.

thanks :thumb:

You should always do what's most comfortable, really. The general rule of thumb is to use your thumb for the three bass strings, and then index, middle and ring finger for each treble string. There's always times when that won't really work, for example if you're picking the four middle strings constantly- in which case you move everything up a string. Fall in to that habit, and you'll learn to deviate when necessary.

Go to the picking link, and check out the unfinished techniques page as well. Those are a few things I've written up that should give you some background on it.
I had a list of songs around that were good but I'm not sure where they are. I'll see what I can do this weekend for ya :).
