View Full Version : Should I buy a Playstation 2?

No, don't bother. You've come to it too late. PS3 is due out sometime this year. Wait and get that.

And don't worry about missing out on great PS1 and 2 games because the PS3 will be backwards compatible.

If you want to get a next gen console, go for the PS3.

If you don't want to spend that much money though, I'd say go for it.

See, that's my concern. If I was made of money, I'd wait for a PS3. But I'm not and a PS2 is not only fun, but cheap (roughly $150) and has a lot of sweet games I want. I'm not a serious video game player, so all of this "latest and greatest" stuff is lost on me. It's just something fun to play when I'm bored, or with friends. I also want to get 24:The Game as well as GTA San Andreas and Tony Hawk. The bonus to getting a PS2 instead of a PS3 is the price of games. PS2 games will be so cheap once PS3 comes out.

edit: I'm not at all interested in an Xbox or Xbox 360. I'm somewhat interested in GameCube because it's so cheap and, from what I understand, has some pretty fun games for it.

Really what you have to do is list the positives of each console and go from there.

EX:
PS2 - GTA, DVD Player, Tony Hawk
GC - Resident Evil 4, Zelda Twilight Princess, Tony Hawk

Who's the Boss?
02-27-2006, 08:52 PM
XBOX - DVD Player, saves on it's on hard drive instead of pain in the *** memory cards, has most of the ps2 titles.

However, the XBOX doesn't have Resident Evil 4, so I'd get a PS2. (I have an X-BOX, I love the harddrive but the few console games I like the most ended up on GC and PS2...)

In response to the server, Sure I'd get a ps2...there are lots of great games for it. It does have a wide range of RPG's and good action games.

But other systems certainly do have their gems too.

X-box have MANY great games other than Halo (see. Ninja Gaiden, Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, The Chronicles of Riddick, etc...)

Same with Gamecube (Resident Evil remake, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, etc 'yeah, real kiddie games ')

Every console definitely have they great games...I guess it's just really in the Eye of the Beholder.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Another thing that's good about PS2 is it will play PS1 games. I do prefer the controller as well. I think I'll get one at the end of this month or April.

So seeing as this thread will inevitably die now, I'll try to get it going with another question: What games do you recommend (re: your favourite games)? Note that I hate role-playing games.

Yea I think they're pretty impressive. Not as good as some of the newest PC games (PCs are still the best gaming platforms), but still pretty good.

Graphics aren't really important to me though. Fun gameplay for the price is most important.

Awesome. What are some good multiplayer games?

Twisted Metal Black, Unreal Tournament(better on pc, way better, any sports game...

For multiplayer, you should look at playing online...I do my online gaming on PC, personally.

There alot of games that aren't "Multiplayer" but are great with a crowd of friends.

GTA3, GTA VC, GTA SA... Just pass the controller everytime you die/busted.

Alot of war games have "co-op". War games check out, SOCOM(all of them), Ghost Recon, Medal Of Honor Frontline(the first mission is worth the game alone) & Medal Of Honor:Rising Sun.

There are solid fighting games,

Soul Caliber and Mortal Kombat to name a couple.

DDR(Dance Dance Revolution) is quite fun with a few people. You'll need to buy the dance pad's though. Even if you hate dancing or w/e...It's quite fun.

Racing games galore if your into those,
Need For Speed series, Midnight Club 2 & 3 are excellent racing and multiplayer.

I'd say the whole MGS and RE series are great, the GTAs provide a lot of fun, the Gran Turismos are good as well and has 2 player races, the Tony Hawk's are good as well and so are the Medal of Honours, and the 2nd one has a co-op mode.

That's around 15+ games to keep you busy.

Why is it people who only own a PS2 say it is better than the XBox, yet people who own both usually say the XBox is better? Play a game thats out on both consoles and its easy to tell which is the better console.
And for the record, I think the PS2 has the worst controller of any consoles this generation. The analogue sticks are in an uncomfortable position, and are way to sensitive. Remember, its basically the original PS1 pad (where the primary directional control was the D-pad) with the analogue sticks later added. Whereas the XBox and Gamecube pads were designed with analogue control as the primary control option.

Yeah, thats why the PS2 controller is widely regarded among the majority of gaming circles to be the best controller to date.

The only thing Xbox has over the PS2 is multiplayer. Other than that, they have a pretty weak selection of good titles besides CoD2.

02-28-2006, 08:08 AM
I'm just saying personally I hate the design of it. If you pick up a PS2 you hands will naturally position so that you left thumb is over the D-pad, not the analogue stick. This is pretty bad design in my eyes, when you expect to be using analogue control for most games in this day and age.

I don't know why so many people bitch about the controllers, I have no problem using any consoles controller. Also I don't think the contoller should influence whether you buy a console or not, the only thing I consider is the game selection.

definitely don't buy it. I have both a SNES emulator and a N64 emulator that I downloaded off the internet for free. If you buy cheap controllers them and configure them to each game, it's a very good way of getting the real thing for next to nothing....although I'm pretty sure it would be illegal.

The new 360 controller is deffinently the most comfortable controller I've ever held, with N64 being my favorite though. The PS2 Dual Shock isn't that good of a controller, it's too small and hurts my hands, also the layout sucks for playing FPS and it's bad enough playing them on a console.

Everybody else that has compared the consoles seems to either just describe their prefered one or trash the others so I'm pretty much just gonna rank 'em.
Graphics Games Controller Extras
1 PS2 1 PS2 1 Xbox 1 PS2
2 XboX 1 Xbox 2 PS2 1 XboX
3 Gamecube 2 Gamecrap 6 Gamecube ? That nintendo thing.
HA!! I only ragged on one of them, but it is the one that deserved it. The gamecubes controller looks like it was designed by a one eyed, claw handed mutant, it has none of the title power of the far superior two, and just all together sucks. Now the others each have their advantages. XboX has the onboard memory unit standard (PS2's must be ordered and installed), PS2 can be obtained in a smaller package;XboX has the bigger selection of action based (1st person shooters and the such), PS2 has more storyline driven games. All in all an X or a PS2 is a good choice.

Yeah I am totally kicking myself for buying a gamecube because all the games i have for it suck especially alien hominid, animal crossing, f-zero, ikaruga, jungle beat, killer7, metroid prime, pac man vs, paper mario 2, pikmin, pikmin 2, pn03, resident evil 4, soul calibur 2, super mario sunshine, super monkey ball, super smash bros, tales of symphonia, viewtiful joe, viewtiful joe 2, wave race: blue storm, zelda: four swords and zelda: wind waker. I also hate that the sticks don't have ****ing huge deadzones and that the controller actually attempts to fit your hands. Also fyi it has better graphics than the PS2, and that can't really be debated unless you hate anti-aliasing or something.

Seriously though the PS2 has an absolutely huge library of games, and I'd definitely recommend buying one. I'd recommend some games but all you've said is that you dislike RPGs, unless I missed something.
