i would recommend a tama swingstar, quite expensive, but u mite get 1 for 500 if ur lucky. and definitely get sabian solar cymbals. not terribly good but a gd starter. hope this has helped:thumb:

NO!

solar cymbals ar terrible.

go look for a pearl export or something like that and llok for some used cymbals on ebay or go for a better beginner/intermidiate cymbal set. stay away from the zidjian ZBT and ZXT and look at the sabian B8 ore the paiste 802. wuhans ore also very popular on this board.

go for any yamaha rydeen

I thought they where discontinued :S

get a cheap pearl set...or PDP...you dont need a huge set...snare, 2 to 3 toms, kick, hi hats, ride, and crash...i suggest looking for a decent cymbal pack...but if u get Sabians dont get B8..they suck! and if you get zildjian don't get ZBT or ZXT or whatever...and dont get Titaniums...i made that mistake and now that i've grown into a more experienced, more knowledgable drumm...i realize they arent great...sabian has some good lines...zildjian has some good lines...paiste has some good lines...but i'll leave the cymbal suggestions to somebody else

personally though i suggest you get a Real Feel practice pad and the heaviest (weight-wise, not sound-wise) drumsticks you can find that are wood (never get Ahead drumsticks)...wood or nylon tip...i personally prefer wood. then save up until you can spend more money on a nice set then your options will be way more open and you can get something you wont be embarrassed to play in a few years like i am with my Starion set...it's complete crap but i'm replacing stuff 1 piece at a time...i'm probably getting rid of my B8 ride next, then the titanium hats...last thing i replaced was my original snare for this really nice Pork Pie snare that's worth $580 i think...if not then it's extremely close, but thanks to the great deals at Guitar Center, i got it for 200, brand new never been touched before

Even cheaper than those above are kits like CB, they are alright, and were my first kit. I bought sabian B8s with them tho.

yeah definately stay away from B8...they're terrible...i'm kinda interested in some Sabian AAX even though i'm a big fan of Zildjian cymbals...i think im getting a 20" K Custom ride...i might get a 21" if i can find one

it WILL be faulty

I ordered the Sonor 3003 in Caribbean Blue earlier today, and I must say....hooray! It should be here in a week or so. That's $100 more than your most, but spend more get more...Rydeen's are king for that price range.

you should get a used kit for under 500 dollars from major companies like pearl or whatever company it is you like. i got mine for $150, and from their, i bought new cymbals for about $150 and replaced the drumheads ($50-$70) and bought a new bass pedal. that all sums up to the $500 dollar range.

you could get a new kit with all hardware and cymbals included, but it would probably be from a company not as famous as tama or pearl or mapex

(this is in a veiw of a beginer so i know none of these things sound good to anyone advanced)
but ive been playin for a few years now. i have a tama swingstar. its held up fairly well over the years and its still sounds good. i whould recommend that set, also my set that i bought from the store came with planet z crash ride and high hats. there not great, but for a beginer there good, and im sure u wont care. also the high hat pedal and bass pedal are really good. tamas are pricey though so if u can get one with snare, bass, floor tom, and small tom then that'll be good

check out this site (know its long, but its good its helpful to beginers)

For beginner cymbals i think B8's are good for the money.

Are you spending 500 on just the kit or kit and cymbals?

PDP EZs are 180 at guitar center. the hardware is decent, so who cares. money is saved for a good pack of heads and a pack of wuhans. beginner sets dont sell for much, so there goes your theory.

Sonor.

Any Sonor for that price will be pretty much the best option.

Whoever said Pearl Export can SHOVE IT UP THEIR ***.

My church has an Export and it takes me 5+ minutes/tom to get it sounding half-decent. Even then... it's just... ugh, I don't like it. Horrible kit, anyways.

Ok I would recommend getting a used kit, whatever you can find for cheap
if you dont want an absolute entry level set you end up going into the 1000 CAD range.
In that range I would recommend a ludwig, gretsch, mapex or sonor. B8's are IMO the best cheap cymbals, get the promo pack if you can, it cost me around 190 CAD and it comes with 2 crashes a ride and hats as well as some sticks, a good head for your snare and a cymbal bag.

Now I would like an explanation as to why people here keep recommending the rydeen. My experience with them is that they suck and are a complete waste of money (less features, more expensive, poorer quality hardware).

you DO realize that it can take up to a few hours to tune a drum how you want it, right? 5 minutes will DEFINATELY NOT make it sound good unless you're extremely lucky and just need to tighten up a few loose lugs...

Note half-decent. I meant half-decent for a 5-minute tuning.

I don't have much time to tune, anyways. The drums detune so much, though... one week I'll have them all tuned high (after spending an hour tuning them all) and then within a month they'll all be just... much looser.

Ugly sounding drums. And perhaps I am lucky, as I get the sound I want pretty fast, usually.
