Im looking to get a new guitar as a exam passing present, and it came down to an epiphone gothic explorer floyd rose or a peavey rotor EX with a floyd rose. I really want a floyd rose as i've had them recommended and i need to move on with my gear. I currently play a squire strat and a Westfield flying v. The thing is, is the peavey a big enough step up or is it just another budget guitar im gonna want to replace in a few months. I kno it has a floyd, but apart from this is it good enough to be using for serious progression? or will i have to cough up the extra cash for the epiphone?

Peavey aren't generally regarded as an awesome guitar manufacturer, but I've only played a budget guitar pack peavey so my opinion isn't fully backed up. Nevertheless, compared to the Epiphone I'm gonna risk assuming that yes, it would be better getting the ep.

If you're looking for a floyd rose in particular, have you looked at other brands? ESP/LTD have some really nice lower-end models with Floyd Roses, and Ibanez RG's get a lot of good praise with the Edge Pro thingummys.

of the two you posted i would go for the Epi X-plorer, but Hades is right, you may wanna check out some Ibanez's

Id go with a Jackson Kelly, but if you can find an 80's Kramer, get that, take a look on eBay for an Agile Ghost, and if all else fails, go for a high end Epi explorer.

Being a person that owns 3 Explorer style guitars here are somethings you need to know. Plan on playing it in the classical position. A wide leather strap will come in handy with the weight balance. The body will be longer then a strat or les paul.

That being said if you really want a trem then Epiphone Goth models come with the ability to have trems on them. LTD EX-350s came with Floyd Rose's as well.

Congrats on passing your exam!

I had a question though. I was looking at flying v's the other day, and I read that they're pretty awkward to play while sitting down. From your experience, how hard is it to play a flying v at different positions as opposed to a strat style guitar?

They're really awkward sitting down. You have to put your knee in the V and have it angled up super high. Any other way you try and play it is just retarded since you have to hold the neck up to keep it from hitting the floor which is a pain.

nah i disagree theyre really good to play sitting down . put the v so it straddles ur right leg and it wont shift, and if u keep ur legs regularly well apart then it will be the same hieght as any guitar not stupidly high. I now find it much easier than my strat, especially cause ur picking hand is lower so when u play the strat ur picking up around ur tits, whereas the v is just above ur crotch ;) so yeah its v comfortable if ur tall like me, and if ur not i cant see y it wouldnt be just as fine.
also like les pauls they have a deeper neck angle, whereas strats are typically dead straight, and many people find this easier. hope iv helped :D
and yes get a flying v, theyre amazing. and make u look dead cool :D
if you get one ur gonna have to show me hehe

Yeah, if you like sitting like that with it than it wouldn't be a problem. Just felt funny to me, probably get used to it after awhile though.

its pretty much holding the guitar at a 45 degree angle to your body

mutant!
03-04-2006, 04:34 PM
^ And resting the guitar on your left (if you play right-handed) knee instead of on your right.

Mr. Badguy

Resting it on your left knee? That seems kind've uncomfortable! Of course, I'm picturing someone playing a guitar with the v locked between their leg, and I'm not sure if that's how you meant it, lol.

I'll definetly get a photo of my v up for you (provided I get it), toxic. I was looking to get the Rhoads Pro 3 model, just to give you an idea of what it'd look like. :smoke:

Resting part is if you are sitting. Classical is just holding the next up closer to your head then playing it straight out.

it gets a lot of attention when i whip it out too I bought that guitar a week ago, its bloody awesome. And you cany play an explorer in classical psotion, its too big. It works great in regular position. One note though, explorers tend to have thicker necks, thats whay i got an iabnez, its the only explorer ive found with a thin neck.

That's bull, I have 3 Explorers and I play in the classical position and I can do it with all of them. My ESP MX-250s and My Ken Lawrence don't have big necks either.

Epiphone Goth series can come with a Floyd if you want one of those.

Save for an Epi, don't keep buying little tiny upgraded guitars. Eventually you'll work your way up to that one amazing guitar.... might as well buy the dream guitar early and not waste all this money on ****tier guitars.

Is my thinking...

That's true. The only bad thing about getting a V as my first guitar, is that I play every guitar in Classical position now.

As for the Epi Goth Explorer, I know a dude that has one and he seems to like it alot. I'd still go for a Jackson Kelly though.

definatly get the epiphone, you will hate having the peavey after a few months and will pawn it to go out and buy the epiphone. and yes i agree floyd rose bridge does kickass but its a bitch to change the strings
