Hello. could you please help to settle a small argument between myself and a friend? he claims because i dont like jamie cullum i dont like jazz. I dont know anything about jazz musicians but he seems to me to be pretty poor. i was just wondering, does he deserve more credit then i am giving him? and could you please give me some name of essential jazz musicians that i can give a proper listen to see some real jazz.

I've never heard anything by Jamie Cullum, but it sounds like your friend is trying to come off as knowing more about jazz than he really does. Jazz is a pretty broad term that describes many different styles of music, from musicians like Eric Dolphy to Charlie Hunter to Frank Zappa to John Coltrane. It's impossible to determine whether one likes a whole genre based on whether or not a single artist is appealing. It's like telling a Skatalites fan that he doesn't like ska music because he doesn't care for Catch 22, or a Judas Priest fan that he doesn't like metal because he doesn't care for Nile.

No, he does not deserve any credit whatsoever. Jazz hobbits have no place in real jazz.

he's more of a poppy jazz influenced singer
he doesn't sound much like a lot of jazz at all

Actually, the motive from "Twenty Something" by Jamie Cullum is pretty closely ripped off from Charles Mingus' "Haitian Fight Song."
Oh yeah, and for recommendations, I'll just give you a few albums I would start someone out on if I wanted to introduce them to the genre fresh. No particular order.
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Max Roach - Money Jungle
From there just branch out on what you like. Try to listen to anything by Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker you can get your hands on. For piano jazz I recommend Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Bill Evans. This is all a very narrow scope of all there is, so don't be afraid to check out more stuff. Ornette Coleman once you've got your feet wet. Who knows? Maybe before then?
Hope this helps.

As we all know Charlie Brooker's opinion is law, and this is his on the young Mr Cullum.
Cullum deserves special mention, because he's particularly odious - an oily, sickening worm-boy, presumably grown in a Petri dish specifically for appearances on middle-of-the-road chat shows like this. Swear to God, if I ever have to see this gurning little maggot clicking into faux reverie mode ever again - rising from his seat to jazz-slap the top of his piano wearing a fake-groove expression on his puggish little face - if I have to witness that one more time, I'm going to rise up myself and kill absolutely everybody in the world. Starting with him and ending with me. Cullum should be sealed inside a barrel and kicked into the ocean, not hailed as a genius on Saturday night TV.
