I was going to check out Cold Roses, but then he released another album before I got around to it, which annoyed me, so I said '**** it' and decided not to get any of those albums. My favourite album of his is definitely Heartbreaker, but it used to be Love is Hell.
So which album should I check out from 2005? I like the sound of Cold Roses more, but being a double album made by Ryan Adams means it will be half full of worthless crap. Jacksonville City Nights sounds nice enough, but I still like the sound of Cold Roses.

I'd definately recommend cold roses from his cd's released in 2005, I didn't like it at first but it grew on me and there are some absolutely classic ryan adams tracks on both discs. Jacksonville city nights is a bit to country for my liking. I'd recommend 29 over jacksonville city nights.
I met the guy a couple of weeks back after a gig, dead friendly.

Definitely get Cold Roses. It fits better with Heartbreaker than any other album he's released. It is a double album, but a short one - only 18 songs (by comparison, Gold had 21). I think it has bypassed Heartbreaker as my favourite album. Jacksonville City Nights is closer to his work with Whiskeytown, I'm not sure if you're a fan of them. 29 isn't worth the time.

I would have posted my opinion if it weren't for the fact that morrissey's post makes anything I would have said redundant.

All three are fantastic and completely different, and I'd suggest at least listening to them all.
Go with Cold Roses if you want a very Grateful Dead, country type sound. It has the most "pop" and a good deal of variety, albeit in that vein just mentioned. This is the most accessible of the three.
Jacksonville City Nights is him dropping the 'alt-' from in front of his alt-country sound and pulling a Hank Williams. This is pure barroom country-western music straight out of the 50s that Ryan happens to be singing. Probably my favorite of the three.
29 is more in the Love is Hell vein of more introspective and less country songs. One track, 'Strawberry Wine', is damn-near the best in his catalogue as well. It's an album he had to write, coming to grips with entering a new decade of his life, and I enjoy it for that.

Cold Roses is a double album, but only for the nostalgia factor of old vinyl double albums. All of the songs could easily fit onto one Disc. So it does not suffer from a handful of good songs syndrome, the whole album is really really good. Next would be 29 , and then Jacksonville for me. Although Cold Roses is easily the best IMO.
I really disliked Cold Roses and Jacksonville. I loved 29. It had more of just I dont know just, ah, I dont know. I just really liked 29 a lot more. It was much different than anything else, and I think thats why I really liked it.

my opinion of this man will be forever tarnished by his terrible Black Flag cover

You can't take Ryan Adams seriously all the time, you know.

Nah I'm pretty sure it was serious, it was on a benefit for the West Memphis Three, all Black Flag covers. Anywho, my mom digs Ryan Adams, I'll give him a listen.

That's the one I was talking about. That album is one of the best tribute albums I've heard though. Ice T completely nailing Police Story: extremely rad
Ah, sorry for going off topic here doodz
