Firstly, is this a review? no. But youre new, so it doesnt really matter, so dont fret about it.

And you really shouldnt want to buy something that just looks cool, it should all be about how it sounds first. And theres only one way to check that out - go try a whole bunch out at your local music shop, and others until you find one you like.

I think BC Rich's Mockingbird looks pretty nifty, but I'm probably the only one. Anyway, if you're only going on looks, have a gander at the ESP F-104 or F-254, those are neat. Most people say Warwick, but Ibanez is alright for metal as well. ESP is also decent at it.

You can polish a turd, but the turd will still be a turd. You might as well just save your money and buy a better bass. Even if you were dead set on upgrading your bass, you wouldn't have much options because, if I remember correctly, a GSR 205 is a five string P/J, and the market for 5 string P/J sets isn't too good. I haven't exactly looked for five string P/J sets, but I also haven't seen any while looking for a four string P/J set. Of course, it doesn't have to be a set, you could mix and match, but the outputs would be different.

You should just save your money for a new bass.

I'm going to try and use that in conversation at least once a day from now on.

oh okay. so.. now... my question is.. can i change the pickups of that bc rich.. cause in what i saw, it has a split coil pickups.. can i change that? and with what? i want a crunchy hard rock metal sound. or does the stock pickups of the bc rich bronze warlock series has a good sound? ..

Judging by your selection of basses, you're on a budget.

I've had an ESP LTD B series bass. It's sturdy, and pretty good for the price. I don't have much problem with B.C. Rich basses, like you'll see that some users have one here, but if you're on a budget I wouldn't want to waste money upgrading my pick-ups. The ESP F series bass would be ready to play, and a nice quality instrument for the price. I'd say go with that if you want to best of both aesthetic, tone, and playability worlds.

the ESP F-104 ? ohh.. i like. but ..i dont understand this :
Model Name F104 4-String Bass
Series
Body Agathis
Neck Maple
Machine Heads Die-cast
Fingerboard Rosewood
Frets 24XJ
Pickups 2 ESP DB4 Humbuckers
Controls Active ESP ABQ-2 electronics
Bridge Adjustable
Hardware Black
Case Not Included
Pickguard
Scale Length
Included Accessories
Other Features Bolt-on construction

are those pickups active..?

The pre-amp is active. It makes it so the tone circuit can truly cut and boost, not like a passive circuit. The pick-ups are passive.

but still? would it have a good sound? for a metal band.. for previews: www.soundclick.com/dodo

Yeah, that's kind of what ESP does. That said, your set-up will make a big part of the sound.

The songs are pretty cool, I like them quite a bit. Seems like the recordings' a little muddy on the drums, but it's pretty bad ***. Your vocalists voice is pretty cool.

Try out the Ibanez BTB405. I have that, and the band I play in is metal. Gets a decently growly fingerstyle if put on the neck pickup (But nothing close to a Warwick though), and gets a good strong slap tone with the pickup towards the neck and the treble up. It has a pretty flat neck too, and feels perfect in your hand.

On another note, it sounds like you're going for Robin Graves bass tone, what are you playing through?

can u rephrase that tryxx? was that for me?

Tryxx
02-28-2006, 08:46 AM
Yeah. Your tone reminds me of Cradle of Filth's bass tone. I was just wondering if that's the kind of sound you were going for, and wondering what amp/stack setup you play through, or whatever you recorded that with.

three_sic
02-28-2006, 08:50 AM
oh.. in our songs?.. i think thats just the mastering or mixing of the bass lines.. with added eq's and other stuff.. we didn't use any amp or stack.. we recorded it directly. but i couldn't possibly get that bass tone while playing live... dat why i really need sumthng new.. my IBanez GSR205 isn't good enough.. for me.

Tryxx
02-28-2006, 08:52 AM
Ah cool, it's probably just the way that it fits in the mix then. It sounds good.

But if you're really wanting to alter your live sound, you should look at a good quality amp/stack before a bass. Unless your GSR is just unplayable. I think you should always upgrade your amp before your bass, I made the mistake of not at first. If your amp sounds like **** there's little your bass can do to fix that.

three_sic
02-28-2006, 08:57 AM
hmm.. amp/stack? why? wouldnt the ESP F-104 carry it all?..

Tryxx
02-28-2006, 08:59 AM
That really depends on how you're playing. The bass does count for a big part of your sound, but if you're playing through a crappy Squire amp, that's what you'll sound like; a crappy Squire amp.

If you're playing through a P.A. regularly, I suppose it wouldn't really matter. The F-104 should help a bit. To me though, it just takes a GREAT bass to make a bad amp sound good. A decent amp can make a bad bass sound good.

three_sic
02-28-2006, 09:02 AM
hmm.. do you think a sansamp would help?.. my friend told me that whatever amp you use.. ull always have that tone.. because of the sansamp.. or is he wrong?

People around here rave about the Sansamp. Check the review index in that section of the boards on here. There's a great review on here over it.

Save up and get a Peavey bass. Check Ebay too. They make some nice basses these days. Relative to other stuff out there, you would get great value.

i think if you're harping for a bc rich, get the platnum edition, its better across the board than the bronze version.

i'de even recommend ibanez's ergodyne series, awesome metal basses, and you can get them pretty cheap on ebay.

Bc Rich NJ series Mockingbird is an absoulte beast. Same for the Warlock, but i prefer the Bird shape. If youve got the money go for a NJ series Bc Rich, otherwise, buy a platinum series and immediately invest in some Dimarzio Pups. Other good choices would be Ibanez Sr405 (kinda a Nu metal vibe) Epiphone thunderbird (again, pickup investment) or a Jackson Chris Biette sig.

forget about your image, and pick up a bass thats worth owning, for 500 dollars you can get a really nice bass if you look long and hard enough. Have you checked out shecter's diamond series? I played a 5 string model in a guitar center and it was fantastical
