View Full Version : Dual Truss Rod?

Y'all know that I'm building a 7-string, and I'm thinking a dual truss rod system is the way to go. Anybody got any pics of this?

Also, to any luthiers out there, will it add too much weight to the neck and make it top-heavy?

Any better solutions?

Carbon fiber rods :p

Is that supposed to be a hit on me for thinking that they were originally strong, non-adjustable truss rods?

Punk!

If you're going to make a 7 string bass, you will definately need 2 truss rods. Carbon fiber rods alone won't handle the stress generated by the strings. Also, the width of the fretboard and neck would be prone to twisting without truss rods.

As far as truss rods making the bass neck heavy, that usually isn't the fctor. The length of the headstock, how heavy the tuners are, and the lenght of the upper body horn are the factors. That's one of the big reasons Conklin has such a long upper body horn, to balance the bass so it won't be neck heavy.

Okay then JP, do I route the cavity parallel to my center line or parallel to the boundaries of the neck?

Parallel to centerline.

Also, what is the best way to determine where the strap buttons should be placed? I can't think for the life of me.

It all depends on how long your headstock is and how heavy the tuning machines are. You might want to extend the upper horn past the 12th fret, like maybe up to the 11th.

My upper horn is at the 10th fret, so that's fine, I was just curious how you went about finding the perfect spot for the second strab button.

The one at the body end?

JP, sorry I couldn't get that box today, I have some kind of flu.

That's fine. I had it all last week.

Yes sir. Pardon me for not specifying.

Yes sir. Pardon me for not specifying.

No problem.

I usually just put it in the middle, on the end of the bass. It seems to work well there.

Good old duct tape. Tape your strap to a spot and see how your bass sits, if it doesn't work, move it.
