Hey guys I'm looking to buy a new bass sometime soon and I need some help.
I've narrowed it down to A Fender P-Bass.(Sun-Burst Of Course)
http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?ItemPos=4&TempID=5&STRID=191222&Method=0&CategoryID=180&BrandID=1349&PriceRangeID=0&PageNum=0&DepartmentID=0&pagesize=10&SortMethod=3&SearchPhrase=&Contains=&Search_Type=SEARCH&GroupCode=
Or A Fender Jazz Bass.

I know it probably depends my style of playing. (Currently In a "Punk-Rock" Band) But I already have a P-Bass (Squier) and I really like the sound of both Basses but i thought I should try asking here because I'm still doing some research into the subject.

P.S: I heard that you can't slap on a Jazz bass. Is this true?

If the sound of the Squire fits your band and you like it, I would get the P.

God no!
Next to Stingrays, Jazzes have to be one of the best slapping basses out there, imo!
And it all depends on what you want your tone to be. Do you want to keep the basic tone you have with your squier? Then get the P. Ps tend to be thumpier, with a big attack. Jazzes tend to be more versatile, and can give you a really nice growl, a nice round tone, or a clean, crisp slap tone. The only thing jazzes cant really do is thump like a p-bass.

Don't be a jerk, man.
Yeah, you can slap on a Jazz and a Precision.
There's been a billion threads on this. Use the search function because I'm not talking about Fender Js and Ps for the 638476376309787985th time. :p

Still, he's only got 8 posts and he's obviously not a bass know it all. You didn't make any references that you were kidding, either, so just be more careful in the future. :)

I really need to try out a Bongo. I played a Stingray 5 at the booth Ernie Ball had at Warped Tour, which was pretty sweet. I love the Stingray tone.

out of those two, i'd say go with the jazz. they are more versatile and if you roll down the volume of the bridge pup a bit, you ca get a similar tone to a p-bass. It doesn't have quite the same low end, but it's a satisfiying tone, nonetheless.... (it's my main tone setting on my jazz). However, definatly look into a MusicMan stingray too, they pretty much pwn both jazzes and precisions, IMO.

I love Stingrays, however I need a bass with 24 frets, hence the reason I want to play a Bongo. But of course, no shops I have been to have Bongo's in stock. Are they hard to find or something?? Or is it just in Australia?

P.
Just prefrence really. If you like both, then it's which feels better to you. Wider P or slimmer J.

Not necessarily. Karl Alvarez is an awesome bassist, he uses p basses, but for recording, he used a stingray on a few. Either way, p would be the way to go if choosing between the two.

i've always found it kind of funny how these 2 basses always get compared, yet they're comletely different. regardless, go for the jazz or try out a p special.

On another note, I own a Jazz, but I originally was going to get a P.
I walked into the shop to pick up my shiny new P bass, and the manager came found me and said, "Man, I am so sorry, but I got in this morning and found out one of the storeman sold the only P we have left. Can you wait another 2 weeks til we get the next shipment in?"
At this point my dad put his two cents in, made the manager feel very bad, and he offered to give me a J bass for a cheaper price then he was giving me the P for.
And boy am I glad they sold that P bass :D I love the J. I love it so much. So many memories. I was in a punk band at the time I got it, and it never let me down tone wise. True the P may be regarded as the better "punk" bass, but I feel the J held up just as good, possibly better. Mad slap tone as well.

Jazz is more versatile while pbass is a standard punk bass, part of the ethics of punk is being different so going jazz would probably be best imo.
And anyways they said i couldn't slap on my thunderbird you can (hard attack and xheavy strings) the only bass you can't slap on is a fretless and even some of them your can.

Anybody come across any major deficiencies in the Mex instruments as opposed to the US ones? I'm just looking at the mex jazz bass myself. unfortunately we pay in pounds what you pay in dollars but hey, we're used to getting raped. even so it looks good value at about £330 compared to double that for the US one.

^ US have better electronics, better pickups, better bridges, graphite reinforced necks to avoid warping and bowing, pre-broken-in necks, S-1 switch (changes your bass from series to parallel), and I think the body woods are different...they're the same differences on both the P and the J.

The Bass Centre in Melbourne has a few Bongo's.
TS, if you haven't got the dosh for a Stingray, I'd go for a Musicman SUB. You can get a seriously killer punk tone out of 'em, but they're also fairly versaltile for other genres. They'll also take a heck of a beating on stage, really solid. As soon as I've got the money together I'm gonna get one for my punk band.

/ponders the pros and cons of mex vs US....
just noticed the highway 1 basses actually..could be a compromise...doesn't have the switch though but i could maybe live without that..

^The highway 1's are good value, sort of a middle ground between the mex and US.
EDIT: Plus they have the satin finish which IMO is pure hotness.

yeah it looks that way, but the spec is basically the same as the mex one now that i analyse it a bit more closely, but just made in the US. save for the better finish of course. ah dammit i wish i didn't have this thing for buying US guitars, its an expensive business...

Jazz bass IMO
I have both and the P bass gets almost no use, sounds very muddy compared to the jazz bass. Plus the neck is alot more comfortable

Jazz all the way. Despite the flaws of the jazz bass, it's a mile ahead of the P bass. Much better overall. The slap tone is good but nothing wild, and the fingerstyle tone is nice, I dig the growl, but obviously, it doesn't do the job for me or Geddy as well as a Wal, Ric, Steinberger or whatever...
Yep, Jazz basses are alright, I really don't like P basses that much. The tone is alright, but when I have a bass with only a Precision pickup, I feel kinda limited, and I prefer the Jazz sound at the neck anyway.
If I ever were to get a Fender, I'd get an Urge I. It solves the problem of Fender basses, 32" scale, 24 frets, 2 jazz bars and a precision split coil pickup. Marvellous.
