I want to learn to finger pick with four fingers instead of two. What are some good ways to go about this?
Are there obvious speed increases?

I find 4 to be a useless endeavour, 3 is good to use though, and can enable a bit of extra speed, but I mostly just use two. But if you want to go for 4, go for it.

Nope.

Yeah, it's really lame to use 4 fingers. You'll barely notice a speed increase, if there's one at all, and it looks really tacky. Stick to 2 or 3.

Unless you're doing that Sheppard 4 finger roll thing that only Quatre can find a use for.

To be able to use four your gonna have to be willing to devote all your time to making your pinky and even ring finger strong enough to sound equal with the other 2. I definitely wouldn't reccomend it, your time could be better spent.

he's using his thumb in that vid.. thus it entaisl that you could play wiht 5 fingers...

Edit: thus its possible to add two plucks to wootens style :x

you just have to work with it. i'm not nearly as good at it as i'd like to be, and i'm working on smooth transitions from 2 finger to 4

matt garrison calls its 4 fingers and thats where he got it from. matt garrison is a pretty good player if i do say so myself.

not questioning his skill as a player, but to me four finger, like basguitarist said, would imply the use of four fingers not a thumb

yeah but when people use 4 fingers and a thumb they call it 5 finger, not that thats common but what i have seen of that has been called 5 finger technique. does it really matter that its called 4 finger technique if you know what he means?
White_Summer

i didnt know what he meant until i watched the vid
but see this is the problem explain three finger? because that could go one of two ways, using your logic

i see your point, but ive never seen anyone do 3 finger with a thumb.

I've never seen a bassist do it but Robby Krieger from the Doors does it. But he's a weird guy so he does it with his thumb behind his index and middle. I cannot see how that is comfortable.

You can kinda see it in that pic.

Yeah and he rules. He uses more fingers for songs like Spanish Caravan though.

I use 4 fingers, I can play faster with less energy! So go out there and learn it.

i can use four fingers and to me wasnt much of a acomplish (sp?), doesnt help unless im playing across lots of different strings quickly, when im playing the same string fast it slows me down compared to 3 or 2 fingers.
So i wouldnt bother if i were you
