Lately i have been trying to find the perfect metal sound for my guitar. I like Seymour Duncan pickups and dimarzo pickups but i want to know what you guys use maybe i can come up with something better to use.

Everyone will tell you different about which is the best pickup manufacturer. Suffice to say the following are all excellent: Seymour Duncan (for diverse styles), DiMarzio (more metal-oriented), EMG (almost exclusively metal), Rio Grande (versatile), Lindy Fralin (versatile), Bareknuckle (don't know much about them, other than that Matt Bellamy of Muse uses them), and TV Jones (don't know).

I am strongly in favour of Seymour Duncan. I like the sound of both their Strat and humbucker pickups, and as they're passive pickups, no routing is necessary for batteries or whatever. Also, many of my favourite artists use them, including Matt Bellamy, as well as Mike Einziger of Incubus.

As far as metal goes, EMG is the way to go; realise, however, that you will need to carve a hole in your guitar for the extra electronics to go into. Not that any metal guitarist since the '80s cares... :thumb:

What? You got it all wrong man. Dimarzio is probably the most versatile on the Planet. Seymour Duncan is ok with versatility but you're still limited with those. EMGs aren't just straight metal. They're versatile but even more limited then Seymour Duncan. Bare Knuckle can be used for anything like Dimarzio but aren't as versatile as Dimarzio but more versatile then Seymour Duncan.

You don't need to route a hole for EMGs either. You can put the batteries in the control panel. Seymour Duncan also has active pickups.

DiMarzio: Ya, okay, they only slightly tend towards metal/guitar hero music. I think.
Seymour Duncan: they make everything. Right from vintage Strat and Tele pups and PAFs right through to the Invader et al.
EMG: okay, rephrase: most metal players gravitate towards EMG. I know they make a few wicked jazz pups too.

Didn't know about the routing thing. And yeah, I know SD has actives, but very few people use them, if you compare those numbers to the JB, Custom, '59 and Jazz.

Dimarzio isn't towards any type of genre. They make pickups for every genre and pickups that can get you tone for any genre.

Dimarzio - Best for lead play aka soloist type i think thats why joe and steve use them etc they also give nice clear tones and have nice clean tones especially the Hs 2 single coil, They give that punch to the sound

Seymour Duncan - Nice warm tones i think best for rock music and rhythm work i think, they give the nice warm crunchy tone i think

EMG - All Power No tone is what ive heard which makes them specific and best for Heavy metal or any type of Heavy music

Don't go off what you have heard. Try them for yourself. I can get some great tones like Satch out of my EMGs. Also Michael Romeo uses EMG and Jazz artists like Ron Eschete use them.

True i never knew he used EMGs..

but his tone is super processed i was looking up on his gear setup and he has a huge set up

and on Mikes guitar site or something it says he uses EMGs because the sound doesnt fade with his huge gear setup, therefore means EMGs have more power.

but that doesn't mean that they have no tone.

His EMG's were very low impedence actually, but yes they are more powerful because they're active. And, although his tone is very processed, EMG-SA and SPC midrange boost get close to his basic clean and lead tones.

Gilmour uses the EXP as well which is kind of a mid scoop in a knob on the geetar.

Yeah. The SPC boosts mids, which he uses for lead, and EXP cuts mids, which he uses for rythm.

Ive tried EMG's, and Seymour Duncans and while both were good I love EMG's.
Ive been through many pickups in a short amount of time and heres what i think about them.

EMG-HZ's (H3)- Alright tone distorted. Clean tone was actually really warm and good surprisingly.
Seymour Duncan-(Screamin Demon in bridge,JB in neck) Screamin Demon wasn't Screamin enough for me good for lighter gain stuff, pretty decent cleans and the JB in the neck had a nice tone all around.
Seymour Duncan-(Invader in bridge,59' in neck)- Invader was all I asked for in the gain department. Only complaint was that it got really bassy at times in my mahogany guitar. 59' in neck was all you could EVER want in a neck pickup.
EMG-(81 in bridge,60 in neck)- Best choice Ive made reguarding pickups. The 81 is a IMO unbeatable tone at high gain and also its cleans arnt terrible. 60 has amazing cleans similer to the Duncan 59' and its gain sound has the perfect warm crunch.
