I suppose technically this is another video thread where I rag on some poor innocent kid, but imo this is a bit more valid than your run of the mill "LOL this d00d treyes 2 play vic and fales".
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=bass+expert+village
That's a collection of video's from the same guy. Now I don't really know anything about "expert village" except that if this kid is a representative of them, it's a rather misleading title.
I don't believe to be a good musician you know to know a lot of theory or technique or whatever, but I DO believe that unless you're recognised as having a very unique or special gift (which you could try to pass on to others) you should be qualified in some sense to teach. That means you should have knowledge on just about all available techniques and YES, you should be able to teach theory, and read music, in case your students desire it.
This guy however, makes so many mistakes it's just not funny in that series of videos. I just thought I'd point out that for any beginners out there, these are NOT the kind of videos you want to learn from.
kthxbye.

You might like the line he plays, but the video is horrible as an educational tool. For a start, he doesn't mention anything about the importance of playing root notes to accent chords, doesn't mention passing notes, and he's talking about very simply chords as well.
He also doesn't say how he constructs the line rhythmically, or how he thinks about phrasing..he just says that he knows what notes he's "allowed" to use, then plays that.
sinister
02-26-2006, 11:56 AM
He's explains the entire of how to write a bass line in 1:16! hot damn!
The only problem he leaves out all the information.
Some of the other videos could be useful to begginers though, but thats the only one I watched.
I think I should make an instructional video on how NOT to use theory to create music.

Like absent of any theory at all? Do you have a specific method when you sit down and write stuff?
Usually I'll think to myself "Hrmm, what sort of melody do I want? Do I want a busy, complicated melody across several strings, or a simple chordial one? Then I decide on a mood by implementing a bassline.
The key to the mood of a piece is ALL in the bassline. I rarely, if EVER, think of "which notes" to play. Most of the time I don't even use any scales at all.

Have you ever wanted to pump out a bass line like you hear in many songs? If so, the bass guitar may be the right instrument for you! The bass guitar is one of the easiest musical instruments to learn to play. Unlike the guitar the basic bass guitar has only four strings.
With this video series you will be able to learn about the bass guitar and everything you need to know to start playing. Begin by learning the parts of the guitar. Our expert will break down the parts of the bass guitar so you understand what each part does. Also learn how to tune your bass guitar with an electronic tuner and tune by ear. Our expert then teaches different lessons on how to play the instrument. Learn chords, scales and techniques. You can even learn to write your own basslines. With some practice and guidance you can be jamming in no time!

Stretching the strings? What the hell is that? That could snap a tuning peg or rip the string right out of the bridge saddle...he picked up the bass by the string and began treating it like a yo-yo. That is not good nor should that ever be done.

It means that he's atleast trying to get what he knows out there to help other bass players
You on the other hand spend your day... arguing on a messageboard. If you can do it so much better than him, then close close yer ****in browser and go make a video
Haha, you're funny.
You're also an idiot.
I can do it so much better than him. To be honest, the fact that I give people advice (usually correct, if I do say so myself?) around here on chords, theory etc shows that I know what i'm talking about more than that guy.
Does that mean I owe it to the bass community to go out, buy a camcorder and start making videos? No.
If he was giving harmless advice to his mates, that would be fair enough but he's not. He's telling ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO LISTEN, to pick their bass up by the strings, and bounce it up and down. With regards to his slapping/picking etc, that's just mediocre, i'm not bashing him for that, but he's not fit to be a teacher.
I don't care if you agree with that or not, it's true. Hell, even Gav said so and you know how much he loves noobs.

Dude, there's a difference between me having a big ego and thinking i'm a good musician, than me saying that I know some stuff about theory and bass playing.
You're a dick. Hahahahaha.

Surely he's helping people by warning them about these lessons?

Seriously, some of the things shown in those videos are actually counter productive, ie his bad slapping technique and string stretching technique.
And btw, if we criticise his stuff, it doesnt automatically mean we have to make our on videos just so everyone knows we arent just mouthing off.
