It's a new solo (or Devin Townsend Band, if you like) album. I still need to get it.

Decent album. I don't think its his best though.

From the 5 tracks I've heard of it, and the one he played live, tis quite good. Weird, but good.

Weren't you going to upload that for me Kage? If you can't that's cool, I'll just go buy it myself.

Yeah, I was uploading it, but it messed up, which is typical of YSI. I forgot about it, but I'll try again.

Sorry about that.

great disc, my favorite now after Ocean Machine. And its officially a Devin Townsend Band record.

I listened to it yesterday. It's my favourite album of the year so far. I totally need to listen to more of his non-SYL stuff.

I've heard that he makes people in the pit live do the polka when they play Vampolka. Tr00f?

ATC

No, he doesn't, but people do it anyway.

Synchestra is the best release of 2005-2006, imo.

Det_Nosnip

Listening now. :) Sounds pretty good so far. This was what I was looking for in Devin....a polar opposite of SYL.

Awesome album. What a great change of pace after Accelerated Evolution! Second best Townsend album, only Terria beats it.

Awesome album. What a great change of pace after Accelerated Evolution! Second best Townsend album, only Terria beats it.

Infinty> Terria.

Bad devil!!
That song is pure awesomeness, especially live.

Kage
02-26-2006, 08:20 PM
I actually haven't heard Accelerated Evolution. On Friday I had it in my hand deciding whether or not to buy it. I didn't, but I wish I had. How does it compare musically to Ocean Machine and Terria?

Ocean Machine is my second-favorite by Townsend (after Synchestra). That album is so incredibly unique to me. I'd never heard anything even remotely like that. Terria is third.

ATC
02-26-2006, 08:32 PM
Accelerated is the only album where he's not been extra-ordinarily inventive. Ocean Machine, to me, was him finding his sound. Those songs got improved in time. Regulator on the album is no way as good as Regulator on Official Bootleg and nothing compared to its awesomeness live. Infinity was him being weird and awesome, albeit in the middle of a breakdown. Terria was pretty. AE is like a combination of Ocean and Terria, to me. It's got the best parts of both and its incredibly catchy. Download Away and Depth Charge to get a taste of it. Synchestra, however, is undisputed champion of the world.

Kage

Synchestra, however, is undisputed champion of the world.
Agreed.

I've heard all hist stuff except AE. I like the aspect of him being incredibly inventive, so I'm a little iffy on getting AE. I love everything he does, though so I'm sure I'd enjoy it.

I need to see DTB live, though. I won't die happy until I do.

ATC
02-26-2006, 09:09 PM
Oh don't worry. It's still plenty inventive. It just doesn't redefine music like his other albums do is all. Comes close though.

Kage
02-26-2006, 09:12 PM
Damn, now I regret not buying it. I wasted my money on that damn In Absentia surround mix instead.

ATC
02-26-2006, 09:16 PM
I read that the surround mix really takes it to a whole new level. It doesn't, eh?
I can't begin to imagine how groundbreaking a surround mix for Synchestra or Physicist or any other Devin album would be. Though as of this moment, I'd settle for a surround mix of any Holcombe Waller album since Devin's going to be busy all year.

Kage
02-26-2006, 09:28 PM
It does but, unbeknowsnt to me, you have to have a DVD-A player to get the surround effects, which is not so of the other surround mixes I've bought. I can still play the "basic" surround mix, which is essentially no different from the stereo mix. I'm going to try and sell it and use that money to buy Accelerated Evolution.

Toaster
02-26-2006, 09:54 PM
AE is good, worth getting, but not great. It's Townsend at his most commercialized. You can definitely hear the pop influence more than on his other albums.

****!! How come everyone isn't raving about this cd?

Kage
02-27-2006, 09:55 PM
I raved about it in the other thread. Raved too much probably.

But I continue to rave. Seriously, this is without a doubt the best CD that will be released in 2006, and one of the best of the past decade.

Toaster
02-27-2006, 09:56 PM
I think the general assumption about DTB is that it's "SYL Pt. 2". Therefore they don't get many unbiased listens.

Why can't people rave in my thread?

Moses

The production is insane. How does the sound get soo big?

I just noticed some of the lyrics in Notes From Africa are the same as on one of the songs on Alien.

He also uses some of the same melodies from previous Townsend albums and within different songs on Synchestra.

Kage
02-27-2006, 10:34 PM
It's incredible all the different aspects that go into the songs on this album.

I thought Ocean Machine was great for that aspect, but Synchestra overrules it. I still love OM like a child, though.

Moses
02-27-2006, 10:35 PM
I have Ocean Machine but I agree, Synchestra is better.

Who's Devin Townsend ?

StreetlightRock
02-28-2006, 03:27 AM
Hes just a musician famous for his work in Physicist, Strapping Young Lad, his 'own' band, The Devin Townshend Band, as well as a whole bunch of other side-projects like Ayeron. Hes works with Gene Hoglan (The Drummer) alot too.

I don't have it yet.

Shouldn't think of it like that already. Should think of it as challenge for the rest of 2006.

yeah, some real love for this album here. Give it time guys, at the moment some songs are still growing..

So far these things have jumped out at me:

The chorus in 'Triumph' is pure gold -- "One word collective, man-kind CONNECTED!!" The guitar riff behind it is just awesome. Ryan Van Pooderouyen's drumming has gone up about 5 levels. Way more double kick. 'Vampolka' and 'Vampira' are great to listen to together, the first is like evil circus music. Vampira's chorus is giving Triumph's a run for it's money. I love it when Dev sings "hate makes the flames go hiiigher!!"

Has anyone noticed about 12 seconds into Hypergeek, theres a frog croaking and a rooster crows.... Well that rooster crow sounds EXACTLY like the one in Zelda Ocarina of time. When the sun rises in Zelda, the rooster crows to signify morning. If youve got Zelda, go listen! Then listen to hypergeek. I swear

DanD
03-04-2006, 04:24 AM
My friend told me today that he likes the song "Vampira," which is odd coming from him, as he only likes traditional styles of metal. I think that just shows how great this album is.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this thread to see what we can get out of it.

So, to get the ball rolling...what's everyone's favorite song lyrically on Synchestra? I'd say for me it's between Let it Roll, Triumph, Vampira, or Pixellate.

Moses
06-15-2006, 01:31 AM
I haven't really analyzed it lyrically but I'll post what I think once I do. However musically my favorite song is Triumph.

Kage
06-15-2006, 01:46 AM
Triumph is a masterpiece. I heard that song and was floored. It's an amazing song. The part with the build-up on the ride cymbol, and then busting out with

One word
Collective
Mankind
Connected.

I love it.

I lent out my copy to a manager from work. I have it on my computer but those gaps in between songs really kills the vibe a bit.

I actually bought this the day my appendicitis started.I remember lying in bed thinking "This is awesome, but oh man do I feel like ****".I actually couldnt listen to this cd for weeks without feeling a bit ill.I soon got over it though.

I agree with Kage. This IS the best cd of 06. If any band tops it, it would be one of the best years in music for a long time. I tell everybody about this cd.

My favorite track is indeed Triumph. That vocal performance is stunning.

I had the same thing happen to me a long time ago with a CD. I had the worst headache I've ever had while I was listening to it. Eventually I thew up. I can't even look at that CD anymore.

Yeah, six months into '06 and counting, and no one has come close to this release.

Definitly one of my favorites so far this year.

I wonder if the new SYL can match it at all? I kind of doubt it, though.
