I think this belongs here. Anyway, I noticed something: I've only heard a few metal drummers who sound just as good live as they do in the studio (Main thing is the double bass). This revelation started at Gigantour; I was very dissapointed with the drum performances there(except for Chris Pennie of the Dillinger Escape Plan). The truth is, out of all the metal live abums and bootlegs that I've heard, I've only heard a few great drummers: Chris Adler, Chris Pennie, and that guy from Rhapsody( I was even dissapointed with Gene Holgan's performace on SYL's live cd.) I'm actually a huge metal fan, but the drumming in general needs to improve. Can anybody tell me any metal drummers who sound just as good live as they do in the studio? Thanks in advanced.

Daniel Erlandsson - Arch Enemy. Fantastic Drummer.

Vinnie Paul - Pantera. Always a solid drummer.

Van Williams - Nevermore. Genius on drums. Really he writes some of the most fitting and cool drums I've ever heard.

I cannot see how Hoglan's drumming could be a letdown live. I saw him and he was fantastic. Albeit... he's not drumming for Death, but the way he plays In The Rainy Season is something I will admire for many a year. He plays all his parts on the CD. I don't see how they could be a letdown.

Daniel Erlandsson - Arch Enemy. Fantastic Drummer.
Yeah, writes some cool parts. Perfect example of what the threadstarter is talking about, though...I was watching an Arch Enemy bootleg the other day, and the guy is pretty sloppy...not very impressive live at all. Angela actually sounded pretty good, though.

Vinnie Paul - Pantera. Always a solid drummer.

Vinnie's usually dead on...fantastic player.

Van Williams - Nevermore. Genius on drums. Really he writes some of the most fitting and cool drums I've ever heard.
I agree! That band blew me away when I saw them a few months ago...one of the best shows that I've been to. Van's a hell of a player...even if he sets his cymbals upside down!

Chris Adler is really solid live. He sounds tighter live than he does on LoG's first album

travis smith sticks to his part and holds it

you should really go and see trivium if you can

Scott Travis for Judas Priest keeps a great show. he never did the most complicated parts, but he never misses a beat and manages to put on a good show for the crowd too.

Also Nicko McBrain

Jimmy Sullivan from Avenged Sevenfold is known to be really solid and knows his parts well.

Nicko Mcbrain does metal with one foot brilliantly, and he plays even faster single double bass live. It's annoying though that Trivium are supporting Iron Maiden's tour later this year, I'd rather have no support act than Trivium.

and that guy from Rhapsody
Yeah, he's a solid drummer.

The Dragonforce drummer pulls it off perfectly live.

Joey Jordison, Jason Bittner, Jordan Mancino and whoever played drums for Dimmu Borgir on Ozzfest 04, i think it was Tony Laureano (i got the Stormblast DVD)

I never thought I'd say this but I have a recording of fade to black and Lars actually sounds pretty good.(I'm gonna get the sh** kicked outa me for that one)

Well, when you're playing that fast...

:smash:

But, yeah. I haven't actually been to any metal concerts since I started drumming. Going to see Opeth in a couple weeks, though, so that'll be fun.

Heard Lopez is off, though.

I don't understand. My point is that even after 2 hours of playing 8-9 minute long songs full of constant double bass, he still goes on with seemingly no problems.

No offense, but Nicko McBrain is probably the worst well known drummer I've ever heard. He is not solid at all.

He does write fantastic parts. I really like his playing. See, I've only heard him live once( on SYL's live cd). His double bass playing was pretty sloppy, but I don't know. It could have been a bad night.

Well, he played perfectly when I went to see them live, so it might just have been a bad day.

That's just plain ignorant. Where's your evidence for that?
Nicko is definitely one of the best drummers out there imo, just listen to The Wicker Man, or Ghost of the Navigator, and you'll see what i'm talking about.

Yeah, I agree. He performs brilliantly live. On Death On The Road, he's extremely solid, and does impossible things with one pedal. No way is he sloppy.

And yet everyone bashes the death metal drummers.

Seriously, thouhg, yeah that's friggin hard, but the faster you're going, the less people will notice mistakes. Mistakes with 16ths at 100 are FAR easier to tell than 16ths at 240.

Wow... that sounds kinda bad. I haven't heard any of No Sleep Till Bedtime, (except for "Far Beyond Metal" which rules all...) but I'm going to download it.

Thomas Haake.

Det_Nosnip
02-25-2006, 01:51 PM
Yeah, Haake is near perfect live...pretty sick.

Another great live performer is Jukka Nevalainen from Nightwish...very tight and clean, excellent feel.

Mike Smith from suffocation is ****ing fast, as is the guy from Mesuggah and Nile. They just keep going and going and going.

Nicko McBrain has an insanely fast right foot, solid as ****.

Chris Adler, Jason Bittner, Travis Smith, and Sepultura drummer is quite good too

Where's my evidence? Watch the live in Rio DVD. He's sloppy with a capital S. I'm actually a pretty big Maiden fan. So I'm not saying this out of dislike of the band.

When it come to playing fast, he's pretty good. But when it come to playing solid, IMO, he is pretty bad i.e. rushes fills like crazy. He just doesn't have a good sense of timing, IMO.

hmmmm, Travis Smith tears it up live, extemely solid. As does Daniel from In Flames, very solid drummer.

the way I see it, no one is always perfect live.... everyone has bad days..... most drummers will be close to perfect, or may have mistakes here and there, be slight off, but remember sometimes its had to monitor the situation if equipment failure/hearing problems in outdoor situations and what not.... there are alot of factors.... guitarist speeds up on accident?...drummers have a lot of responsibility and when your play at high speeds like that, any mistake is very noticable..... i believe that anyone who puts down the good solid studio track has it in them to replicate, some may not be as consistant, but they are still good drummers, they just need to fine tune...... some people are more anxious in concert situation, its alot easier to rip a solo in my studio then in front of anyone.. just keep in mind there are alot of factors.....dont be so quick to judge...

^there is only 1 drummer i've seen play COMPLETLY perfect live, and that's neil peart. but sick metal drummers have mostly been said, but there is a band called goratory that's around MA their drummer is crazy. i for get his name

Carn
02-26-2006, 09:33 AM
Nicko McBrain IS a sloppy live player. But the rest of his playing makes up for it. Can't think of anyone else sounding good with Maiden.

TTTSNB
02-26-2006, 12:46 PM
Well, generally, that isn't the case, but in the more extreme drumming world, newer drummers often try to do things that are just beyond their ability on the record, just because someone like Tony Laureano or Derek Roddy can do it, and as a result have to have their parts fixed in the studio, and therefore they tend to suffer live.

^^ I'm not a big fan of Unearth, but their drummer definitely impressed me with his live performance when I saw them at SOTU.
