This just out of curiousity how many of you have tattoos?
Is it part of the culture of being a drummer?

not really, it has to do with the style of your music, most outrageouse Metal bands, will have A tatoo. Go to a christian rock band, none will lol .Im in 2 Metal bands 1 christian Rock, And soem other jam group, so I plan on getting a Large cross on my back lol. And Just for the record. You dont need a tatoo to be considered a drummer.

That is silly. Most drummers I know do not have a tattoo.

I do however have 2.

it's part of the culture of trying too hard to rebel, but ultimately winding up doing the same exact thing all the other "rebels" are doing.

heh kidding, kidding.. I used to think that way...because that's sorta how it was.. but now tattoos are so ridiculously mainstream, that....well, there hardly seems to be a specific culture for em now. they're pop culture, mostly. except for the people that get hardcore addicted and can't stop after their first.. definitely a bit of a subculture to that..

When I'm 40, if I still want a tatoo, I'll get one.

Whether or not you have a tattoo has nothing to do with playing the drums.
Sure a lot of musicians might have them, but so do a lot of basketball players.

Here's one way to look at it. If you spend more time and money on tattoos than you do on drum lessons, your music is secondary to your image.
I'm not saying there is anything fundamentally wrong with this. It works for a lot of people.

I happen to be watching some rap video with the sound off yesterday, I don't remember which one, but they're all about the same -( 4 minutes of chicks, hot tubs, bling, abundant hand gestures, & big clothes) and I was thinking about how being a musician is more of an image for some people who don't quite have the directed self discipline that other musicians have to wholeheartedly study and monitor their musically expressive capabilities.

I'm not trying to pick on hip hop, either....some of it I listen to. What I'm talking about isn't genre specific. It's sort of like the difference in the connotations of "pop star" vs. "musician".
This post will probably just inspire a flamefest, but whatever...................*posts reply reguardless*

Most people that get tattoos regret it later. I wouldn't like one, most of em look ugly too.

I like tattoos and if one spends more money on tattoos then muscian equipment maybe it just means tattoos are really expensive (they are)

once you buy a good drumset most people dont buy another for years at time (sometimes) but tattoos, lots of people get them regularly so you end up paying a LOT for them.

I personally like tattoos, but get them with a purpose)
me i just want to get them so basically chronicle my interests at diff. points in my life.
I love comedy so im goiing to get lots of funny stuff
i like drawing so ill probably get some of my drawings done as well

Your so right (about the rap video descriptions) i actually usto like eminem and thought it was cool when he waved his hand around like a mad man.

anyways, I would never think about getting a tattoo because there are three options in my mind;Get big muscles, get a tattoo, or leave your shirt on.

I've always kinda been thinking about getting one. Something not big, not intricate either, very simple, but strong and of course meaningful.

Sounds like my first one. Spent 50 bucks on it. An eternity symbol, very little shading, not much work, but it came out nice.

I don't mind tattoo's, I'm open to the idea of getting one, but I probably won't. I don't really see it as a turn-off on a girl unless it's something massive...

IMO tatoos are hella stupid and trendy now. People all over the place have them and its kinda stupid, Its just turned into a huge *** fad. The only tatoos i dont think are stupid are tatoos with great meanings such as A father with his childerns name on himself with a good image, or even just the names. Tatoos from being in some sort of the military, Tribal tatoos that are actually tribal and not this crappy tribal crap people get now and days just to be cool. Stuff along those lines.

I agree that tattoos have become the new fad. I have one and I will get more but not just for the sake of having them. I believe that they are great if they have some meaning. I have a sun because I find that how my day goes has a lot to do with wether or not the sun is out and around here we go through long periods without a lot of sun which can be tough on people. My other band member have tattoos with respect to their families and a couple of the others have some sleeves with very cool schemes that I bet a lot of tattoo haters would even like.

I don't have any tattoo's. I'll probably end up getting some in my life. I've decided if I ever think I want a tattoo, I'll design it up, think about it for a few years (preferably over a transitional point in my life), and if I decide I still want it I'll get it.

I'm not anti-tattoo or anything. I can't stand band logo tattoo's. And I'm not a huge fan of tribal tattoo's. I don't mind a little bit of the tribal design being incorporated, but I don't like straight up tribal tattoo's. I love tattoo's on girls though. My wife has like 4 or 5 tattoo's and I wish she had more.

You have obviously never seen P.O.D.

Those guys could market their skin as a limitless supply of ink.

As to the tattoos... meh, I'm probably never going to get one. I see no need.

I don't think tattoos are necessarily bad, even though I don't have one or feel like I'll ever want one (I'm 26 y/o now -- my late teenage years were spent during a time when they were becoming super mainstream popular).

creating in ANY capacity (music, art, design, body modification, dance, etc) is awesome....it's just that people these days are getting tattoos for all the wrong reasons. not that there's a "right" reason...but when you're 16 y/o and you decided to get a butterfly on your ankle...or a "tribal" band around your arm....or some silly tribal-esque pattern on your lower back...(like everyone else)...you've got to wonder what your own motivations are.

tattoos are quite cool, I think. the reasons so many people get the same stupid ones is not quite as cool.
