So yeh i just took the pillow out of my bass drum and i think its great without a pillow. Before my bass was way too weak and i had play soo hard on the pedal for it to be heard!! and i am glad to say that i use absolutely no muffling on my kit at all now!!...i use a clear ps3 over my stock bass head (amb i think) with a 5" port. hehe is using a ps3 counted as using muffling?? well that is the only head i have with muffling.
If you havnt tried your bass without anything in it - have a try and see how it sounds!

I really hate the sound of non muffled bass drums, It just goes on and on for sound, and its a horrid sound lol. Muffled is the way to go if you ask me.

Ever since I got my superkick 2 I havn't used any muffling on my bass drum and it sounds great. It has just enough resonance to it that it doesn't sound dead but it doesn't ring so much it sounds like a tom.

i've yet to hear a goodly tuned bass drum that goes on-and-on.

its not just having the muffling inside that changes the sound, my guess is you had a giant blanket completely up against the batter, thats why you had a "weak sound"

Well, proper tuning does lend resonance.
It also lends audibility. I think you'll find yourself sounding much better now especially when playing with other people and on stage, if you do either.
ps3 IS counted as using muffling. I suggest getting another ps3 as a reso. It sounds awesome.

I disagree. Using a muffled head is muffling, but I still don't consider that muffling the drum. When I think of muffling, I think of external devices such as o-rings and moon gel.
anything past 1 ply is muffling. The ps3 is one ply plus a ring that acts as another ply.

But not if its just part of the head that is doing the muffling. I hear many pros say they dont muffle any of their drums, yet many use powerstroke 3's on their bassdrum.
pauloz!
02-25-2006, 12:29 AM
it is using muffling because it has an o ring in it and by the way i only had a small pillow against the reso head. I might get a coated ps3 reso just for try and see if it sounds better...
EDIT: anything past 1 ply is muffling..???

You've also got to consider that drums are an acoustic instrument.
Acoustic instruments sound different in every single room you play them in.
In small practice rooms you might like muffling in the kick.
You've also got to consider why you're playing/who's listening
just practicing/(no one's listening)
recording/ (microphones applications and needs)
and then with a live performance you have to consider the audience
live performance indoors-mics or no mics?, big or small room?
live performance outdoors-hopefully with mics
Personally I think you're better off without it, or maybe just using a towel, but nothing like a big thick blanket or a huge pillow.

overmuffling makes the bass inaudible in the presence of other instruments not to mention the rest of the set

for bass drum i reckon pinstripe as a batter head and ps3 as a resonant. no pillow, moon gel, o-ring or any sh!t like that and ir sounds the best for me.

ive got the superkick 1 on batter and just a regular reso head with a port hole that came with my kit. i stick a bit of gaffa tape on the inside of the reso head (so it cant be seen) and it sounds awesome.

That is what i use, EQ3 over EQ£3 with no muffleing. The 2ply head is muffled already.

they do, if you use a pillow. were talkin no internal muffling here tho.
i was using a clear PS4/clear PS4 combo cause thats all i had at the time. then i went to clear PS4/clear EQ4. now im currently using clear EQ3/clear EQ4 combo with one of the muffle rings removed from the clear EQ3 batter. (yes they are removable)
the difference in reso heads makes zero difference, but the batter heads make a huge difference.

Only crappy bass drums that sound like toms need muffling. Most good bass drums dont need muffling.

dude noo way!! My bass drum is crap...my whole kit is crap coz its a beginners kit and yet after i put new heads on it it made it sound very reasonable. The kit is in great condition but good tuning and heads make all the difference

Point proven. This is what I'm talking about. May not be a pro, but you hear this all the time. "I use a PS3, but no muffling".

comon ~ we know he means "no bedding" in the drum.
if you loosen one lug completely thats muffling too ~ lets not be too literal OK? ;)

well yea we know that ~ but losening 1 tension rod is an age old muffling trick from the old big band and jazz players, not that i would ever do such a thing myself

Sorry, When I think of muffling, I think of external factors coming into play, not the head itself.

I recently loosened my batter up a bit more, which took a great deal of punch out. I then took 1 blanket out I have 2 in. I also added a 2nd hole to my reso. See what happened is, 2 blankets was too much, but adding a hole and leaving 1 blanket in seems just right.
I also keep a rubber chicken in for good luck.

A small blanket that lightly touches the head and reso will be perfect...Un muffed bass drums sound bad....

No, I think of internal muffling as cloth, internal dampeners, etc.

It's more common in funk, big band and jazz players keep their drums tuned up high to allow dynamics to speak out. Muffling in jazz/big band? Not a chance they needed the drums to power over the incredibly loud horn sections. Just listen to any old big band where the recordings where done with simple overhead mics, those drums kick over the noise.
The old funk trick would be tuning one of the bottom lugs of the snare side almost totaly off, (the ones near the throw off) clyde stubblefield style. That basicly kills any ring the drum would have and it gives it that classic funk dead sound.

i dont know man, im so old you think i remember?
it was an interview i saw long ago, old big band drummers, talking about some of the difficulties of early live television. they loosened a batter tension rod to muffle some of the ring out the drums. thats how i first heard about that.

i totally agree.. make sure it's a black reso though!.
does anyone know how a ps4 sounds like?? is it in any way different of the PS3? I know It's thicker or something, i just don't really know the difference in sound..
