As some of you may know I have a four piece DW. 18x22, 8x10, 11x14, and 5x13. I am quickly gaining on enough cash to add another tom. To me its between a 9x12 or 13x16. Im asking your help, which would you take in my position? And why?
EDIT: I really like to have a really versital sound, from jazz to rock. I mostly play all types of rock all the way in to metal.

13x16, cause I loooooooooooooove low toms. Tuned high... aw, man, I love that ring they give.
Plus, and 8x10 is pretty damn tiny anyways, and 11x14... meh.
What would be more useful to you?

I got the bass, 2 toms, and snare for 1500US. It was a great deal, all brand new except the gently used snare. It was in the DW showroom for a while so I got it cheaper!

would you use the rack tom more or the floor tom? positioning and being comfortable is just as important as the sound.

Thats pretty much what I was trying to ask everyone else, which will I need more? I was also somewhat 51% 49% in favor of the 12 inch tom cause I like how 2 of the toms can can be right there in front of me, ya know. Do you guys think 10 14 16 roll would be too much of a sound gap?

What?
14" Depth
14" Width
I have a 14x14 on my starclassics, the 10" and 14" are the best toms.

Hey dumbass. He is adding on. "Alien"
Get the 12x9
10,12,14 Would sound more even.
Of course the 16 will have more punch, But I would still go 10 12 14, over 10 14 16

I really took your advise in, but my drum teacher is is leaning me in the other direction. I like the even gaps, and how I can place them all next to each other.

Rack? Mount one on a floor stand?
There are ways.
But if you want the smaller tom, go for it, no one's stopping you, and it may even be a better choice.

It is more practical too. Take it from a guy who has big drums. Sometimes your gonna want to just be carrying a 12 instead of a 16.

More even gaps, more portable, mo betta. It's a wonder major drum companies sell these sizes in sets.

02-24-2006, 10:02 PM
hmm, you could go either way...
16" toms are better iop, but in ur situation i would go with the 12" tom, to get more of an even sound. (Id take 10 12 14 over 10 14 16)
i have the famous/popular 12/13/16 tom setup, and i wish the 13 was a 14", its not that big of a difference, but i dunno whatever.
all up to you in the end, if youl end up with both eventually it doesnt matter toooo too much

Well isn't that helpful? :p Definitely the 9x12. More even gap in sound, easier transport, and is a rack tom.
Plus its cheaper for the while! :thumb:

Go for the 12".. it will fill out your kit and youll have a lot more even sound like Futuro said. I had the same question a while ago, adding a 14" or a 10" to my current 12" and 16" setup but I chose the 14" because a 12, 14, 16 setup just sounds better IMO and so will a 10, 12, 14 setup up.

hahaha I ment to put 6 but theres no big difference. But it sounds pretty good for a tom that shallow. It blends well with the other toms and it doesnt take **** for it to tune the way you want it.

Not entirely. It all depends on which measurement you place first, and in my case, I do Width by Depth.
As for your tom? I'd still go with the low end. It's all in the tuning, buddy.
Edit: See, it's hard for me, since the two toms you don't have are my two favorites. The 12" and the 16" toms, in F.A.S.T. sizes, sound absolutely effing BRILLIANT together!
